    Texas Lower Rio Grande Valley

Just got back from a trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Spent 3 days birding there. Had over 120 species with 42 life birds which was great. Got to see the first state record of a Smooth-billed Ani which was cool. I put together a video slide show a number of birds: This google...

McAllen TX - warbler like bird

This was taken at Bentsen RGV reserve on Tuesday. Nearest thing I can think of is a Pine Warbler based on size, bill. coloring and expected birds. The front of the eye ring looks a bit off though for a Pine Warbler. These are the best photos I got unfortunately.

    Madagascar Advice Request

My wife, 13 yo daughter and I will be visiting Madagascar in the middle of July for about 19 days. We are planning to hire a guide for a custom trip. We are really fond of wildlife (including birds - but not a hardcore birding trip) and want to experience as much diversity as possible. So far...

American Golden Plover - WA USA

Here's a photo of a Golden Plover today from the WA State coast near Ocean Shores. There were 10 Golden Plovers and most of them seemed to be Pacific however this one I'm thinking it might be American. The face is white with no hint of yellow and the cap is fairly dark. I think it is molting and...

Red-tailed or Swainson's Hawk - Yakima WA USA

I'm leaning toward a dark Swainson's due to no dark leading edge of the underside of the wing and the light barred undertail coverts. Taken yesterday. What do you think? Thanks Doug

    New Zealand Duck

Saw this bird in mid December on the North Island at the Waimangu Volcanic Valley on the North Island. The bill is huge and seems Shoveler like but I can't convince myself that's what this is. What do you think? Thanks Doug

Fluttering Shearwater? - Cook's Strait NZ Dec 19

Here are 4 pictures of a Shearwater. Looking at my Birds of NZ Book Fluttering seems to be the most likely and fits fairly well. What do you think? Thanks

    White-capped Albatrosses? - Dunedin NZ Dec 24

From the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin I saw 3 Albatrosses floating in the water a ways out. I took photos and on quick review I thought they were all three White-capped Albatrosses. Now back home at my computer 1 of the birds seems a bit different. Most distinctive is the horn of the bill. It...

Golden Plovers - WA State USA

Yesterday I saw several Golden Plovers at Ocean Shores. There was a group of 6 that I was thinking were probably all Pacific. Later I found another Golden Plover at another pond that was with a couple Black Bellies. This one had no yellow wash on the face I could see and longer primary...

BB or AG Plovers - WA State USA

I found a group of 25 plovers on a spit in Port Angeles. This is right on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most or possibly all were Black-bellied. I saw a couple in flight with dark armpits. I did wonder if there might be an American Golden Plover mixed in. Here are 5 different individuals that I...

Cooper's Hawk or Goshawk - USA - WA State

This bird was seen a couple days ago spiraling up on the thermals in the mountains. I was at about 4,500 elevation just North of Ellensburg. The bird was very distant at the time of the shots. A very knowledgeable person I was with was about 95% confident this was a Goshawk. I'm having a hard...

Vesper or Brewer's Sparrow - Vantage WA USA

Saw this bird in a sage brush area. Both are know to be in this spot. I was certainly hearing Brewer's Sparrow singing but not Vesper. This bird look a bit different than others I saw. What do you think Brewer's or Vesper and why? Thanks for you help. Doug

Tricolored Blackbirds - WA State USA

Two weeks ago I was looking for Tricolored Blackbirds in a known place for them near Walla Walla WA. There's an area that attracts hundreds of blackbirds. I felt pretty confident that the first picture shows a Tricolored second from the left. The other two pictures have possible candidates for...

Lincoln's Sparrow? NW Washington State USA

Was out looking for a Swamp Sparrow. Saw several Lincoln's. I'm leaning toward Lincoln on this but it looks pretty white under the chin. Missed focus on this one so that doesn't help. Couple other side view. Would love to have it be a Swamp. What do you think? Thanks Doug

Sprague's Pipit ? Eastern WA State from July

I just found some photos from this summer that I hadn't gone through. With the really long hind toe I was thinking this was some sort of Pipit or Longspur. Looking through Sibley Sprague's Pipit seems closest. However It doesn't look like this species has every been seen there before. What do...

Mourning Dove? - Seattle WA USA

Saw this Dove flying by and snapped some shots. Seems more like a Mourning than a Eurasian Collared because of the following: Black spots on wings Undertail coverts seem buffy No neck ring Primary are not real dark However the tail bugs me. A couple pictures almost give it a forked-tail look...

N Goshawk or Cooper's - Cascade Mtn WA State USA

Yesterday I was out looking for hawks migrating on a ridge about 5,000 feet in elevation. I saw this bird and am not sure on the ID. It seems to be an immature bird that is either a Cooper's Hawk or a Northern Goshawk. I'm leaning toward Northern Goshawk because of the heavy streaking that...

Sharp-shinned Hawk? - Cascade Mtns - WA State USA

Debating back and forth between Cooper's and Sharp-shinned. I'm leaning toward Sharp-shinned for the following reasons: • Eye looks big relative to head • Tail looks pretty square when perched • Streaks on breast look fairly wide like a sharp shin What do you think? Thanks Doug

Juvenile Brewer's Sparrow - Cascade Mtns WA State USA

Saw this bird at high elevation across the county line from where they usually are. I'm thinking this is a Juvenile Brewer's Sparrow. Seems to match pretty well with Sibley's Northern picture. 2 possibly 3 different birds but I think all the same species. What do you think? Thanks Doug Schurman

Juvenile Northern Goshawk? - Cascade Mtns WA State USA

Today I saw a large Accipiter that I think matches the criteria for a Juvenile Northern Goshawk. Here's my thinking • Upperwing Coverts show a good bit of pale mottling • Tail feathers when fanned out keep more straight than a Coopers would • Underpart are heavily streaked down toward undertail...

Juvenile Killdeer? WA State Coastline USA

I saw this juvenile a few days ago along the WA Coast near Gray's Harbor. At the time I thought it was a Killdeer. There was an adult around the area. Juvenile Cooper's Hawk? - WA State USA

This this hawk on a tree next to feeders in a rural area outside Seattle. I'm pretty sure this is a Juvenile Cooper's Hawk but wanted to confirm. I was wanting it to be a Sharp-shinned but chest pattern seems more like a Cooper's. Also the head appears to be what Sibley call orange and buffy...
