UK binocular deals, special offers and bargains

You weren't sold ex-demo though, you were sold new. They have a separate category for ex-demo items. You can buy new 8x30 sfl from them, so why can't they send you another new pair? Answer, because they weren't new. My experience, with a different retailer, was advertised as new, very cheap /...

UK binocular deals, special offers and bargains

Which to me is suspicious. They have (New) stock. If you'd paid full price they would have replaced. I think we have to keep a very close eye on online optics purchasing, going forward. It's becoming as unpredictable as the 2nd hand car market!!

    2024 Bat sonograms

By far the most regular bat to get picked up with a bat detector in most parts of UK, Common Pipistrelle. Hockey stick shaped calls, with a peak at 46KHz in a cluttered environment such as this example. Peak frequency can be as low as 40KHz over open ground. typically 10 calls per second.

    2024 Bat sonograms

Never really considered doing this before, but simple noise reduction on the bat spectrogram, in Audacity, gives a much more accurate reading of the start and finish frequency. For the Barbastelle it would read: FStart 48.5KHz, FEnd 29KHz, fmax 42KHz, which is what you would expect. (FStart...

    Zoom H1e

I'm quite amazed with the results I got here... A sample of the Original file which was dominated by gusty wind (last 13 seconds). In Audacity, I reduced the noise, added some high pass filter, and amplified the calls. Is there anything else I can do to improve my results? Final result here:

    Zoom H1e

Zoom H1e are now in stock at several online retailers, so I purchased one this week. I don't have a great deal of experience of higherquality sound recording, so don't really have much to contribute on that score, but I have a few initial findings from a birding perspective... It's very small...

You struck gold there I think. Notice they are back to full price today!

UK binocular deals, special offers and bargains

Hope someone has got a good deal out of this. I will say, I'm suspicious, I had a very good offer from a reputable optics shop just before Christmas. The binoculars were "new, price matched", when I bought them online, but on arrival they were faulty and covered in a substance, like talc?! On...

    Parabolic vs Shotgun

Again, straying off topic, but what would happen if I used my shotgun mic at the focal point of a parabolic dish? Would I have a super sensitive, very directional hearing device? Thinking more of looking for birds as opposed to sound quality

    2024 Bat sonograms

ID'ing UK bats, about 12 of our species are relatively straightforward to identify just by the echolocation sonogram. A couple more doable at a push. Then the remainder are in the Myotis group, and their calls are all pretty much straight lines with very little to differentiate. The Auto Id...

    2024 Bat sonograms

I use an ultrasonic microphone ( dodotronic 384evo) connected to android phones/tablets. There is an app called bat recorder which is excellent, and records every bat that triggers the software. Other people use the echometers which have their own android app, and can auto identify to some...

    2024 Bat sonograms

Nice start to the year with a Barbastelle at Martin Down, Hampshire, amongst many Common Pipistrelle passes.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Yes, this is probably the only aspect of most of our lives where we are free to go about it however we want. If we are being pressured to ramp up a year list, or get to a certain total, we may have blown that freedom straight away. I have loads of goals and challenges, and I know when they have...

    Podlights

I've made a couple of UV LED sets that run off 8xAAs. I've also blown a couple of sets up, and watched a battery get very hot and swell up before throwing it across the garden (faulty battery holder)! I don't think the podlight is much more expensive than home made when you factor everything...

    Podlights

The lepiled, I think because of the price, you think it must be superior, but who knows. Location, other light, weather, I suspect make much more of a difference to the results. I'd be tempted to have one of each (lepiled and podlight) and run them both at the same moth trap!

    Podlights

I have one. I've nothing to compare it with, but it brings in moths when there is no other light around. (And no mains supply) I don't think it works at all well in my garden, near streetlights. A Sylvania 368 blacklight does ok here. It's flexible in that it can be powered by usb power bank...

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

yes, and to be honest, I despise of most things that try to turn our hobby into some kind of sport, except along the lines of a personal challenge. It doesn't need it. But the article read well.

That's a good article. Good for the reputation of the hobby, conservation etc.

The Red nut bag phenomenon. (Siskins in the UK)

I'm finding Siskin quite hard to find lately, in Test Valley and New Forest. I'm seeing more Redpoll than Siskin, which is very weird round here.

    Cloud Storage

I have a windows 11 laptop, which came with desktop, documents, downloads folders etc not local to my machine, but within Microsoft onedrive cloud. Unbelievably confusing, and overreaching from Microsoft!!

    Cloud Storage

I find this difficult, particularly with photos. If I delete them from "the cloud" does it delete them off the phone too? Especially in the Google applications I think you have to assume that once something is linked to the cloud storage, then deleting it from the cloud deletes it from...

    Your silliest/most entertaining/unlikely birding accomplishments

I have an example of fieldcraft/groundwork being just a little too good! And it must be 20 years ago which is concerning! But I remember it really well. On holiday in Lesvos, we heard a Scops owl from the car when driving home to the apartment. The next evening we returned to the area before...
