    Black kite ssp Rwanda

Recently (march 5) saw this group of black kites in Rwanda (Gashora). Milvus migrans parasiticus is the common species down there, while M. m. migrans is an uncommon winter visitor. To my eye, the bird on the right is juvenile parasiticus while on the left is alt migrans. Any divergent opinions?

    B. buteo? W. Rwanda, early March '17

eBird, however, lists this as a rare option for that part of Rwanda, and so I looked a little closer. Seems more possibly an African Hawk-eagle, no? Compared to Ayres's, has a whiter belly. Any pointers appreciated.

Thanks Tom, I had looked at African Hawk Eagle, but failed to look at Ayre's for some reason. Looks like a match.

    B. buteo? W. Rwanda, early March '17

Greetings, this raptor was seen in Gisenyi, Rwanda (~1700 masl) March 2. My first thought was common buzzard, but the tail banding seems rather distinct and thicker than B. buteo, and the breast markings dont seem quite right. Other option would be Mountain Buzzard but it doesnt seem marked...

    BOU TSC disbanded

I'm the press release they talk about Clement's and IOC as if they're the same thing, as they are expecting then to almost me at the conference in 2018. To me that was the most interesting part. Is it a forgone conclusion?

    Eagles, Pune India, Jan 8

Thanks Tom. That's interesting, that's a possibility we had not considered. I had thought that one might be tawny based on long tail, protruding head, long wings, and pale inner primaries. Are there specific pointers making you think imperial? And despite my muddling of it, everyone seems...

    Eagles, Pune India, Jan 8

Seen yesterday in scrub/forest adjacent to agricultural land. Three birds total, but photos may be of only two different individuals. Candidates seem to be Indian or greater spotted eagles and tawny or steppe. Thanks in advance!

Thanks rockfowl, always there in my times of need!

    Sylvia species, Pune India

Greetings all, Spotted today in scrub/disturbed forest next to a river, what I originally thought to be a Lesser Whitethroat (common here) but later looked at the photo and started thinking Orphean Warbler (uncommon). Certainly in this light, the iris looks very pale, which Grimmskipp (as it...

    ABA Big Year 2016

The highest number submitted means that someone will submit a higher number to the ABA, ie before they review it. At least, that's how I read it. It really was a big year for the ages, but I was thinking how frustrating it must a be for all four of them. Like Christian getting 750: any other...

    ABA Big Year 2016

I've been loosely following the big year, so I'm familiar with the general storyline and personalities involved, but does anyone know what this, from Johns blog, is referencing? Is there legitimate concern that Olaf padded the numbers? Are there birds that went documented?

    What makes a bird "rare"?

Thank you all for the interesting feedback. The ABA and BBRC guidelines were specifically what I was looking for: a definition reconciling the vagueness of the word "rare" with the precision of numbers. And I understand that ebird filters are down to county level in many places, and also...

    What makes a bird "rare"?

Hello all, I'm living and Birding in India, and an avid eBirder. I often look at the handy target lists they can generate, and it's made me really curious how eBird, local reviewers, and rarity committees make the cutoff on the arbitrary distinction of a a bird is considered "rare." In places...

    ABA Big Year 2016

I know others must have thought the same thing, but how can people talk about"continental" big years and bit include Mexico? To me, there are only three rational big year categories for US residents: 50 states, lower 48, or North America, which list time I checked includes our neighbor to the...

    ABA Big Year 2016

If only an intermediate had flown down and landed next to this bird so the ID would've been easier for people.

Which ecozone is the Limithang road in Bhutan in?

As it happens I just traveled Lingmethang road, and, as with much of Bhutan, its hard to classify. Which ecozone it is in might not be that helpful, ultimately. At its start, at the village of Lingmethang, it is low elevation (maybe 800 masl?) dry scrub/conifer. Being on the lee side of some...

    Weird Minivet in Bhutan

Thanks MJB. Grey-chinned Minivets do have distribution here (i've seen them once here, many times in Taiwan) males have an orange cast, but I cant find examples of females with the orange. The second photo shows a pretty yellow chin, so I think it has to be female.

    Weird Minivet in Bhutan

Seen today in SE Bhutan, ~210 masl. Was mixed with some Short-billed and Scarlet Minivets. When I saw it I immediately took a photo, thinking it was a lifer Rosy Minivet, but now I'm not so sure. It had a light sort of pastel pink/orange color in the spots on its back and tail, but had yellow...

    Eagle in SE Bhutan

Aah, I see that in shape/structure/size, but I guess the tail just threw me off. Thanks for the help.

    Eagle in SE Bhutan

Hello all, this eagle was soaring and kettling up over thick forest in SE Bhutan (~700 masl). At first glance it looks like a Steppe Eagle, but appears to ahve a very short gape. Also looks like a Tawny Eagle to my untrained eye, but those don't occur this far East (acc. to the books). So I was...

    Thattekhad closed?

That's good to hear, wintibird, thank you. Would the best place to stay down there change with the fact that the park is closed?

    Thattekhad closed?

To answer my own question, I've heard confirmation that it is closed. Really a shame. If anyone has other suggestions for some of those specialties, I'd love to hear it, or if you hear anything about it reopening, I'd be happy to hear it!

    Thattekhad closed?

This from the hornbill camp website: Is this still the case? I was hoping to stay there in April to try and see some of the Western Ghat endemics, do I need to change my plans?
