Aspiring moth-er - waiting for new Robinson!

Well, I've spent a few years doing wine ropes, white sheet and torch (and wandering around with torch in the dead of night, causing the neighbours to gather and whisper about me in hushed tones) and even tried a home made robinson trap which caught me a lovely cockchafer but not many moths - but...

    First swallow of summer!

After the coldest, nastiest April day I can remember yesterday, I saw a swallow on the way to work today. I know one swallow does not a summer make, but it was a welcome sight!

    Is this a buzzard?

Hi everyone, sorry I don't have a picture - most afternoons as I drive home I see a medium-sized bird of prey (larger than a crow, but not by much) with rounded wings and looking like it is dark coloured, just above a patch of rough ground next to a motorway sliproad. It sometimes seems to...

    Less swifts this year?

I only have three individuals flying above my house this year so far - there used to be dozens. Has anyone else noticed less swifts, or is it just early in the year and more might arrive?

    Thaw and amphibian death survey

Hi everyone, after the thaw which revealed a heartbreakingly unhealthy small pond with several dead frogs, I filled this in and hope everyone who has had frog/amphibian deaths will do also.

    Frog deaths in small pond

Following the severe cold last year and this year, my pond water turned bad, and I found frogs and plants had died and there was/is a sort of opaque look to the water which also really smells bad. The plants are water soldier, with a miniature water lily. The lily and some of the water soldier...

    nest box camera

Hi all, I am hoping to put a wireless camera in my nest box, which I can't see from my window and have no idea if birds are using it! I've seen one advertised that is wireless and works with windows 7 etc. - that's what I am looking for, but this one was nearly £70. Is that about right for...

    Shop-bought shredded suet

Since Atora is cheaper than suet pellets... I thought I was being really clever. I've put some out on a new bird table, which has been investigated by one starling and a couple of blue tits but they don't seem to be taking the suet! Is that sort of suet not suitable, or am I being a bit impatient?

UK east cheshire: wagtail with strange colouring on cheeks

I can't find this in my book or online - it was a wagtail with dark colouring but cream/yellowish coloured cheeks. There wasn't any yellow on other parts, but it was darker overall than the pied wagtail that has been visiting. I tried to take a photo but it was too blurred to see the cheek colour.

    planning a hedge

... to replace a section of very overgrown leylandii, about 20 metres in length. What I'd like to do is cut the leylandii down to about 5' stumps, remove all green from them and use them as support for the new hedge. I don't want to remove the stumps because of the expense... I had a section...

    dried fruit?

Apologies if there are already answers on the forums somewhere... is dried fruit good to put out? If so what kinds are best?

    the seagull has landed!

I've never had one land in my garden before - they've been circling around at times and I have no idea what kind it was but one just grabbed a bit of biscuit and took off again!

    Is it a female blackbird?

I have one to three large birds that look like female blackbirds ground feeding - they seem a bit fussy and don't stay long. I don't see more than one at a time feeding but I have seen others around at the same time. They are brown, with a sort of lighter colour on the throat and breast. The...

    my garden list

Hope it is ok to post a list... these are the visitors, regular and otherwise, to my garden over the past five years... house sparrows dunnocks starlings blue tits great tits coal tits long tailed tits (very rarely, a few years ago now) Blackbirds thrushes (not sure which type) blackcap (on the...

    Here they come!

Having been up at silly o'clock I've cleared the snow from the driveway, filled up all the feeders, put out some free suet balls on the ground and some warm water in a small container. So far... the robin is delicately humming to take sunflower hearts, two blackbirds are enjoying the suet...

    bird bath question

Hope this is the right forum. My lovely concrete bird bath top got broken in a hilarious eucalyptus felling accident. I cleverly (or so I thought) replaced it with a blue ceramic planter bottom thingy, secured underneath with "no more nails". Since then, I have never seen birds on it - it's...

    do starlings put goldfinches off?

I've been feeding starlings since I heard they're in decline - this is the first time I've put out suet foods deliberately for them (I usually feed just sunflower hearts and niger seeds). I'm using cheap suet balls taken out of their nets and left on the ground, but I also put some more...

    saying hello :)

Really glad I found this forum - now I have someone to share my birdwatching joys with! The snow has brought in some great visitors and today is the first day I've had the chance to just sit and watch. I've been feeding sunflower hearts and niger seeds, peanuts and suet pellets in my garden...
