    Devil's Lake, WI

I had a fun hike at Devil's Lake just south of Baraboo. I got lost but once I found a trail I knew, I stumbled upon a Townsend's solitaire. It's the first one I've ever seen in my home state (I've seen them in Colorado) and it let me get a really good view. It made my day.

    For a friend in Tennessee

My friend in Clarksville saw this bird in her yard and snapped a few pictures. She took them on her phone, but I tried to find ones that show either more shape or color than the others. I'm thinking it might be a mockingbird or some sort of thrasher but I'm not sure. I put them in an album and...

What do you think your first species of 2012 will be?

Just for fun, no gambling or anything :-P I'm guessing mine will be a black-capped chickadee.

    Staring contest with a hawk

Okay, so I guess this is more "my running day" than my birding day, but here goes: Last evening while I was heading out for a run, I saw the silhouette of a bird just off the side of the road in my yard. When I got closer I realized it was a hawk, either a sharp-shinned or a Cooper's. I stopped...

    spicey suet

I put up some suet today that has hot pepper in it to keep squirrels from eating it. My only questions are whether or not it actually works and if it would stop raccoons from eating it as well. Does anybody have experience with this type of suet?

big hairy spider in southern Wisconsin

There was a mystery spider on my deck last year, and I thought I'd just post about it here. It was very large (about the size of a small toad when it had it legs close in tight by its body). In fact, I thought it was a small toad or a maybe a brown frog at first because of its size and...

Funny conversation I had a few days ago

I was at a friend's house and we were talking about hummingbirds. Out of nowhere, he asks if some are born with legs and some aren't. I was amused yet slightly disgusted by the thought of a legless bird, but I was curious about why he thought so. Turns out it's because sometimes the birds perch...

    2011 list (Tred)

So far this has just been southern Wisconsin (Dane, Rock, and Walworth counties). Also, it's very clearly an amateur list, but it's the first I've kept so it's awesome. Jan 1 1. Black-capped chickadee 2. Red-breasted nuthatch 3. American goldfinch Jan 2 4. Hairy woodpecker 5. Downy...

    Hi from Wisconsin

Hey everybody my name's Kevin and I'm new to the site. I was raised by birders but I didn't get seriously into it until about sometime last year, despite always enjoying birds and other wildlife. This is the first year that I'm keeping track of everything I'm identifying, and it's really fun.
