Probably a Yank one then, ours would work out of their own base. The Hercs could be anybody's including civil ones on charter to the UN. Cheers John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

By Paphos do you mean Akrotiri? It's a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III: I can't see the markings clearly so I can't tell if its one of our 8 or one of the USAF's 228. If we were delivering aid by airdrop I'd have expected an A400M but there may be reasons why not. Cheers John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Airbus A400M Atlas C1 (assuming it's an RAF one, which is most likely). Good effort through the windscreen! I can remember coming South through the same pass many many years ago when it was all single carriageway, with an impatient clown right up the exhaust pipe of the Mark 1 Escort my mate...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

LearJet. It's possible that it does airfield radar calibration flying and that's why it was doing circuits. Cheers John

Don't let the Ukrainians hear you say it's Russian! Antonov is Ukrainian and so is the operator of that blue and orange Cub, which only goes over me when it's cloudy or dark grrrr... John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

The Atlases do run the loop. I haven't seen it myself (yet!) but very impressive for such a big beast. John

Could well have been intending to turn and fly down the A5 pass, past Tryfan and hard right before piling into Y Garn, then. Cool! John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Probably. He might also have realised belatedly that he was still squawking, most of the Lakenheath birds disappear from ADSB pretty quickly after launch. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

AFAIK the final state will be two squadrons of each (USAF squadrons have 24 aircraft, so the base has about the same number of combat aircraft as the entire RAF). Also quick enough for round the island of GB and back for lunch..... ;) John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

It will have essentially the same model of Merlin as the commonest present day Spitfire variant, the Mk IX. The main thing that makes a difference to Merlin sound (apart from, at the extremes, power settings) is the style of exhaust. Early Spits and Hurricanes had their twelve cylinders...

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Yes, in the markings of the red tail fighter group composed entirely African-Americans. This privately owned one is based at North Weald I think. Cheers John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

I'm sure you know, but anyway its a Lockheed C-5M Super Galaxy. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

I think so. Johnnie Johnson described the Griffon engined Mk XIV as " very good but not a Spitfire any more" and I imagine that was a typical view. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

The F-16s are working out of Mildenhall I think, not Lakenheath. It's part of Cobra Warrior II/23. There are Canadian Hornets in Waddington as well. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Couldn't have been a Belgian flag on an F-16 could it? Did you definitely see blue or could it have been black? Not every air force puts their flag on the tail as such but the Belgians certainly do. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Today (15 September) is Battle of Britain Day. Cynical historians may remark its principal claim to that title is that it was the day the RAF's claimed "score" was furthest from the truth (185 German aircraft destroyed) but the post-war corrected total of 54 still underlines that this was the...

Try adsb exchange. If they are going operational they will stop squawking soon after takeoff but you can get lucky. John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

I don't suppose they do that many tests each year and the Meteors are long since amortised. If they still have, as I suspect, a few tons of cheap spares from when they went out of RAF service, why change? In addition to which, it may well be that a Meteor as a very old and fairly low performance...
