    New garden bird! Well, 5 metres outside the garden! Always thought there should be Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers in the Goyt Valley and this morning there was! Viewed from the house but by the time I had the camera and slid down the drive it had gone. Will keep looking!

    Low and behold I come home 6 chaffinches and 3 goldfinches ignoring the feeders and walking along the ground pecking up dry rice.. lol. You should be careful with dried rice - it swells up significantly when wet (inside the birds little tummy!)

    Extending the feeding station I've "planted" a dead tree to attract birds mainly for photo opportunities - hoping they will perch and pose! So far is working well with Siskin Redpoll Nuthatch Blue and Great Tits Chaffinch Robin Goldfinch all posing well. I'm waiting for the Great Spotted...

    Looked out of the window this morning to see a Green Woodpecker hopping around on the lawn. Dashed downstairs naked, grabbed the camera and crept outside. Don't know if it was the camera or my body but it flew off pretty sharpish.

    Collision! Just witnessed something I've never seen before. A Robin and a House Martin collided head-on. Sadly the Robin died but the Martin is currently convalescing on the Conservatory roof. Wonder how often these aerial crashes occur?

    Pied Flys Watching this morning. The male is a different one - he does not have a ring. Female taking nesting material into new box (whilst as usual the male watches!) The new box is far less hidden than the previous one so hopefully will be good for photos

    Very busy at the bird feeder today!

    Pied Flys 8.oo am this morning and the nestbox is empty. No sign of female or youngsters but interestingly the male is checking the box, singing and calling and chasing off other birds. Dont know if he's planning to do it all again....

    Pied Flys The young(don't know how many) are peeping out of the nestbox. Mum is feeding non-stop though Dad is noticeable by his absence! Saw him briefly yesterday but its Mum doing all the work. Hopefully I'll catch them when they leave the nest.

    Pied Flys The Pied Flys in the garden have clearly got young now as they have both spent all day bringing food to the nestbox. Its amusing that the male perches after delivering food but as soon as the female appears he dashes off to look for food. Under the thumb??

    Pied Fly update Watched Them mating yesterday evening and again this morning. I was not wearing a long grey mac at the time!!
