UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Not a sighting, but since we discussed the release of the Smallshire & Swash book on this thread: the release date for the second edition of Dijkstra and Lewington seems to have settled down finally. It's due out on 15 October. Hardback, paperback and ebook editions on the same day...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

There are a handful of Willow Emerald at Trap Grounds nature reserve in Oxford, which I went to see on Saturday. I think there was a sighting somewhere in Oxfordshire last year, followed by several locations this year including Otmoor as well, so they seem to be getting established. Egg-laying...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Every photo I've seen on the internet of a yellow-winged darter in the UK over the last few years has been one of the other darter species, usually common but occasionally red-veined. Which doesn't constitute proof, of course, but a fresh common darter would have to be the most likely.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

News on the BDS sightings page - the ditch in Canvey Island which had a Southern Emerald damsel sighting a couple of years ago had a report of 7 immatures on 3 July. They were reported to be low down in a hedge near the ditch, which fits with reports from other sites of what sort of habitat they...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Brown hawker at Otmoor RSPB yesterday, along with a very fresh-looking ruddy darter.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Lesser Emperor washed up dead on a beach in the Scilly Isles at the weekend. Presumably a fairly recent demise given that it was sufficiently intact to be recognisable. https://twitter.com/BDSdragonflies/status/1270723785046384644

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Year list for Ravensroost meadow now up to 8 with black-tailed skimmer and emperor added yesterday. Nothing exciting - at present I'm restricted to locations with few visitors and wide paths, which isn't a common combination, so haven't been able to get to any sites for the less common species...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

I have the first edition of this (Dijkstra & Lewington). It's also excellent, and anyone who prefers paintings rather than photos to help with ID won't find any better. The only issue I had with it was that the distribution maps were rather out of date. I've had the second edition on pre-order...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Amazon have been quoting a date this week, while other sites were giving 14 July. I'd assumed the difference of dates meant it had slipped back, but perhaps it's actually been brought forward.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Available to pre-order here: https://www.hive.co.uk/Product/Dave-Smallshire/Europes-Dragonflies--A-field-guide-to-the-damselflies-and-dragonflies/24290063 It's not out until 14 July and I'm not sure if non-UK suppliers will get it at the same time as the UK stores. I imaging the BDS shop will...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

I've just put in a preorder with Hive, who are currently offering it at below cover price.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

This doesn't count as a record, but at the end of last week there was another of the occasional reports of Ischnura senegalensis emerging from someone's tropical fish tank. It was reported on Twitter by someone from the Reading area and identified by Dave Smallshire.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

27 April saw a first record of Variable Damsel on Twitter (Kent) and a "fairly sure" report of Black-tailed Skimmer on the BDS site (Sussex).

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

On Twitter I've seen a photo from Heysham Moss of a recently emerged four-potted chaser. The first on the BDS site was on 19th, on the Llyn Peninsula. Not only very early records, but surprisingly far north too.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

In the UK a red damselfly in a garden is safely identifiable as Large Red. Small Red is a creature of boggy heaths, one in a garden would be a truly remarkable record.

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

Another new species out yesterday - Marc Heath photographed a Hairy Dragonfly in the act of emerging early morning on the 15th. He's in north Kent. (Also I see from the BDS website that an exuvia was found at Stover CP in Devon on the 12th, by Jon Avon.)

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

There are no reports of Broad-bodied Chaser on the BDS website yet, just the one unverified one on iRecord and I haven't seen any so far on social media, so well worth putting in a record of that sighting. (Not that it's ever not worth putting in records, of course, but you know what I mean.)...

UK dragonfly & damselfly sightings 2020

This is likely to be a difficult year for dragonfly recording, but hopefully those of us who have access to ponds can keep some information flowing. Please feel free to contribute your own sightings, or news that you've seen elsewhere, and we can at least track the emergence of the different...
