New BOCC list published, though a small number of red list species dropping down to amber is great news these are outnumbered by those going up a category. Always a great peice of work that is used to inform ecological impact assessments (well, when they are done properly anyway). Endangered...

Noticed a rather large grasssnake floating in canal in Salwarpe (by bend beside cottages). Fished it out to measure. 112cm long - a bit of a whopper, average length is published as 75-80cm with largest ever in UK being 1.8m. Some damage around neck (though snakes do tend to have quite a long...

Two big black birds stuck together at Coney meadows today. Struggled with ID but after extensive checking of guides and the internet I have settled on them being 'vel-crows'. Sorry about that, have a good Christmas all. Triturus.

Woodchat There was a huge uproar about 'general licences' a couple of years back, Wild justice headed up by Chris Packham, Mark Avery (ex big wig at RSPB) and Ruth Tingay launched a legal challenge to DEFRA on the matter. In essence if you 'wanted/needed' to shoot/control 'pest' bird species...

Morning all. I know most of you will be looking upwards as many of our migrant birds return but it is equally exciting if we look down as many of our native plants are developing fast. Check out these learning and ID resources for plants https://www.speciesrecoverytrust.org.uk/resources I...

Swallows arrived at Salwarpe yesterday. Two birds, does that make a summer? Also last week on 2 consecutive days had two sightings of a peregrine in area around village hall. Last encounter was pretty noisy and distinctive as it was being mobbed by 3 crows.

Spot on Woodchat, the structures and operation of them are pretty neutral, in the wrong place they can lead to habitat loss but they most often are designed to retain existing features such as hedgerows and streams. There are opportunities to do some positive management around the edges and...

Just a quick reminder, as I never imagined it would be much on an issue round here. I managed to pick up a tick on my leg yesterday and the only opportunity for this was a brief stop off on the canal side near to Porters Mill. So, Woodchat as the weather warms up think carefully if you are...

There was some discussion about grass snakes recently, I thought the following statement from ARG UK helps to clarify the matter. Sorry if this is going over old ground that has already been covered. In short… we still only have 1 native grass snake species, it has just been reclassified as...

Frosty morning First frost (of sorts) this morning in Salwarpe. Ice on car so a definite change in seasons. Seems to have been a good year for Jays in the village (a few seen this weekend) with much fewer magpies than previous years.

Rainfall for June Just for interest I have downloaded my weather station data for the last few weeks. Based upon historic data (1981-2010) in June, the entire UK averages 10 days of rain, totalling 62 millimetres. In Salwarpe over the 16 days of June we have had it has rained on 9 days so...
