    Here is a Small Skipper seen at Moseley Bog today. The upper view shows the distinctive slightly curved scent line, whilst the other view shows the antenna which are brown underneath unlike the black of Essex Skipper. I've thrown in a Roesel's Bush Cricket, also seen at the same site today. Des.

    It looks like you have picked a female to photograph which means there is no scent line: a diagnostic feature. In addition, the other important difference between Small and Essex Skipper are the antenna which should be viewed from underneath so that the brown, in the case of Small Skipper, and...

    Most of south Birmingham was within the ancient county of Worcestershire before many districts were swallowed up. These old vice-counties are still used for recording purposes in relation to fauna and flora, but not birds. I live in VC 37 and Fox Hollies is just inside the eastern boundary...

    There seems to be quite a few Red-eyed this year, often along the east track, pointing to the garden pond as the source. The Broadmeadow pool could also be their home. Des.
