Would it really change anything to let us play along? Let's see the dang photos already.

If that's true, this guy needs hoaxster training. Sending the photos only to the experts first? Behind closed doors? Hahaha! HOAXING - UR DOIN IT WRONG!

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

AFAIK, anyone can post anything they want at those kind of press release sites. Who knows, maybe it's somebody's fictional writing assignment from a marketing class to measure what kind of buzz they can generate out of some random fictional story. Just because somebody writes down some...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Well I hadn't noticed, but in the mean time, Mike Collins and Bill Pulliam have today both taken RHWO videos and report them to be good matches to Mike's flight5nov clip. http://bbill.blogspot.com/2009/11/side-by-side.html http://www.fishcrow.com/winter10.html

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Well I don't consider myself an expert, but thanks for the compliment. Sorry, I forgot to inlcude the lens information. Mike informed me that the camera is a Sony HDR-HC3 HDV 1080i Handycam® Camcorder, and he confirmed he was at full optical zoom with no digital zoom. The specs for that...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

I got some feedback that my chart may be confusing. Here's the deal; someone should check to see how fast red-headed woodpeckers fly. If actual RHWO flight speeds don't overlap what my chart shows for the video, then one might be able to eliminate RHWO as the bird in Mike's video. Worth...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

It seems Mike may have some delays in getting the shots I need to confirm the lens field of view. Nevertheless, I'm fairly confident that my information is correct based on the specs of the camera, so I'll go ahead and post what I have. Since there is no scaled reference near the bird, I've...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Well, I've sorted out the calculations for the bird's speed and distance from Mike's flight5nov vid. Results might be useful for evaluation of candidate species like RHWO. I just want to confirm some details about the camera first, then I'll post up the info.

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

I know Mike's is half speed and the animated gif is aroud 1/4 speed, but my first impression is that RHWO has much faster wingbeats with less paused "tucking". But then I've never seen RHWO in slo-mo... It would be nice to be able to look more closely at some RHWO footage for comparison, but...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Structure looks all over the map to me, depending on the frame. Keep in mind I'm just a hack... Head looks completely missing in frame 72, and then quite longish the very next frame... Quite a few look short, while 84-87 are a bit longer... I don't know if any of those longer ones have a...

Yes, there are different versions of that shot floating around the net. Here's another, where the contrast is a little better. I'd love to find a hi-res version sometime. This is hands down my favorite IBWO photo. Absolutely spectacular. "Female Ivory-billed Woodpecker leaves as male...

And here's "Adult ivory-billed woodpecker in flight, April 1939". (Tensas plate #3, Tanner's #4171080p ) link ...and I hope everyone knows I'm just kidding about Tanner's I.D., btw. My warped sense of humor. Forgive me. :) [ahem]... Ring Necked Pheasant [cough]

For reference, here is Tanner's "Young ivory-billed woodpecker in flight, April 1939 " Pic is from Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Records (Mss. 4171), Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections, Louisiana State University...

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

OK, here are some animated gifs again. These are from Mike's Nov5 video. The crops are centered on the bird, so any slight undulations in flight are completely removed (so caution advised regarding flight characteristics).

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Mike mentions a possibility that the Nov 5th bird might be a Red Headed Woodpecker. I think frames like this one look pretty darn exciting, though: Especially the long slender aspect ratio of the wings, and the white at the rear of the wings spreading very broadly, looking like it might...

One more before I go rake leaves; here's a 400% enlargment of frame 8 (click for full size): Please note; these are extracted frames, enlarged, and there may be significant artifacts from all those manipulations. Nevertheless, here it is. Enjoy.

    Ivory-billed Woodpecker (formerly updates)

Here are frames 3, 4, 5 from that sequence: I interpret all three of these to be views of the top side of wing (bird banking left?). I don't think frame 3 can be the underside of the left wing, because it can't move that far between frame 3 and 4 (assuming frame 4 is top of both wings). I...

Yes, '70 and '78, southern Indiana near the Ohio River system, I believe. He had a website (www.sheridanzoo.com/ivorybill.htm), but I see it's been pulled. Google has it cached, here. And I notice that the entire www.ivorybillphotoproject.com site is completely pulled down now. Waiting for...

Bill Pulliam provides a comparison of the same view with and without bird #3 present -- he and others apparently got copies over a year ago for review. His comments and analysis are posted at his blog site. For the other "mystery birds" an additional pic with no bird present might also help to...
