For anyone interested, the pics mentioned are here : https://twitter.com/RICHIEGANNON/status/552899201466912768?s=09 I'm only looking on these on a mobile screen in a packed tube carriage (so not the greatest for careful study)... but my initial reaction is that these are Linnet.

Kids who've seen lots of birds are certainly driven around by the their parents, for sure. And being out and about, learning the craft of birding (whether on a local patch, or in other bird-rich bits of the country) is certainly the way to become a better birder. But with respect, I guess you...

That's nothing... Try looking up Mya-Rose Craig, aged 11 - think her British list has just topped 400, and world list 3000!

The place I've always looked is on the NW side of Braxted Park - approx where the '1' marker is >here< (Hopefully the link will work - grid ref is TL 852 164 if it doesn't!) There is very limited parking around the junction here, so be careful not to block access. From the marked point, walk...

I'd do the seafront - the point will be really exposed in this weather. At least on the front you can get a bit of shelter. Ages since I've been down there, though - most of my seawatching is in Norfolk.

Think the issue might at least partially be that it's a slightly different 500, Rob! ;-)

Steve A's post about different types of 'birding groups' sounds spot on to me, not just for Southend (where I only know a small number of the local birders) but also in the general case. I don't know many really active field birders who regularly go along to RSPB local groups or similar talking...

Hi Daniel Probably not until the 2011 bird report comes out - AFAIK, no-one sends out decisions to individual observers. If I recall correctly, the majority of the last lot of records to be assessed were the final ones for 2010, so there should be another batch of 2011 ones coming round as...

With full respect to Les, it isn't his call - there's an ID panel to assess all description species. (And Raven is one of these: see http://www.ebws.org.uk/ebs/List_Taxa.asp?pageid=11 and scroll down). The principle is that none of these have should have records published where they haven't been...

There are indeed fairly regular Raven reports - but it's a description species in the county, and very few ever get written up and thus make it into the county reports. Even those that do get submitted end up "not proven" at a surprisingly high rate for a species that doesn't require much ink to...

Try the Bittern Watchpoint at 70 Acres Lake in the Lee Valley near Waltham Abbey - there's usually one or two about, occasionally crossing the channels between the sectors of reedbed right in front of the hide. And I gather there are at least two Bitterns around as well.

That's a surprisingly high ratio of Pallas's to Yellow-browed - interesting! I'm sure it would be much lower in e.g, Norfolk.

Others have already commented on the Essex birding email list that Rossi hasn't been seen, despite a number of locals putting in some time and effort. I would be surprised if he returned now, this late in the year, given that I think he's usually back by late August.

Eh? There were single Pallas's and Yellow-browed Warblers there yesterday! I only saw the former, a stunning little bird. Edit - sorry, I'm a day out - see you were posting about Saturday, in which case, bad luck!

Another big recommendation for that Wryneck - couple of photos on my blog (link below), taken while I was lying flat out on the path with the bird no more than six feet away. You just need to exercise a lot of patience and be careful about how and when you move. Also on that blog post are some...

I popped down to see the egrets early evening, when they were still on the saltings, so we viewed from the seawall near the golf course on the north side of Canvey Island. Apparently earlier they'd visited the cattle field below and west of the castle. The adult is a cracker - certainly the...

Nice one! If anyone else is pondering whether to go and look for the sandpiper, you need to go in the next few days. There will be no access to the reservoir away from the causeways from Monday 4th Jan. Until then, you can get a permit from the visitor centre, as long as you're a member of EWT...

No problem - hope you feel better soon! You should certainly post your opinions, regardless of experience - everyone here is learning at some level. I think this pic: http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulforsdick/4028436473/ suggests that the underwing is oiled, it certainly looks a lot less clean...

    Essex Birding

Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion (which is obviously based on having seen the bird, unlike me), but given that the comment about the bird being oiled originated from one of the most experienced and knowledgeable birders in the county, I'm happy to take his word. The fact that it...
