    Your binocular choice does depend on your geographical location, doesn't it? The further north you are the more glare you have and some areas are just less sunny and more overcast all the time where a 8x42 is beneficial.

    Interesting that the EL showed more detail in shadows. The EL is very good in low light.

    Optically did you like the 10x42 LX or 10x42 EL SV better? Those LX had good optics outside of maybe a little CA.

    10x is a lot less steady than 8x for most people. What you gin in detail you lose in resolution because of the shaking.

    How is the weight on it? Is yours the HGL? Those were fairly heavy if I remember correctly.

    I think John kind of answered that above. Smaller apertures with higher magnifications especially roofs seem to have to be built to very exacting specifications because any imperfection seems to be more highly magnified by the smaller aperture and higher magnification. Have you tried any 10x32?

    Those are rare now but better than most 10x32's out there. Nice wide 65 degree AFOV and better at glare control than the EL 10x32. Do you have the EDG 10x32 also?

    If you are doing a lot of low light viewing a less expensive 8x42 will serve you better than an alpha 8x32 in most cases and that is my point. It is going to be brighter and have easier eye placement. If you do mostly daylight birding an alpha 8x32 with a bigger FOV might be a better choice.

    The point I was trying to make is I think aperture is one of the most important if not the most important specification of a binocular and if your limited in budget you might be better off going for a less expensive bigger aperture binocular than a more expensive smaller aperture binocular.     You're correct. If your priorities is low light performance than the bigger aperture is preferable but if size and ergonomics are more important then the smaller alpha would be your best choice.

    I agree eye placement is very good on the EL 8x32 but the EL 8.5x42 is even better, and it is better in low light. Weight must be very high on your list then when you are choosing a binocular. How is your EL 8x32 for glare?

    I was incorrect about a 7x50 have better DOF than a 7x42. DOF is determined solely by magnification. I was confusing DOF with a stereoscopic image. The 7x50 Porro has a better stereoscopic image than the smaller 7x42 roof which is because of objective separation.
