    Spot on! The auto focus on cameras is at the point where the exact on eye focus is standard for bird photographs, achieved in a fraction of a second. It makes it appear that the binocular community is caught in an early 20th century time warp.

    There was a post war Japanese stereo binocular design whose objectives were at the end of double jointed tubes, somewhat more complex that the Zeiss foldable range finder shown by John Roberts.     The zoom feature is easy to add, provided it is on only 1 optical train. So a zoom binocular would have a Harpia like front end with a Swaro BTX binoviewer attached. It does sacrifice the 3D effect of conventional 2 train binoculars, but that may be an acceptable tradeoff. I do not know whether...
