    Interesting! But isn't the point that they don't have a common ancestry? Yes, they're all woodpeckers, but Lesser Spotted is only a distant relative to White-backed, Middle Spotted to Great Spotted, Downy to Hairy and so on.

First of all, how on Earth did the authors of the paper come about firmly placing mahrattensis in Leiopicus (and stating that the clades are geographically monophyletic), when it certainly seems to be embedded in Dendropicos (or whatever it should be called) or at least...
