From Phil Andrews on RBI forum "In Britain there are no records of more than two birds together although five were present at Rahasane Turlough, County Galway on the 10th October 1963."

Thanks to Arniemonkey for the PM and father Dave for the gen. Heard this evening at 20.30 but not easy; somewhat drowned out by a Curlew alarm calling nearly in synch with it's song, three tractors mowing in adjacent fields, and a light aircraft taking off from another!

Anybody happen to have any idea on the Quail that's been reported near Shillito Wood over the last week? I've been up three times (twice in the evening) and unfortunatley heard nothing in the area.

I don't know if you have been up already but I heard (third hand) that the roost was now down to low numbers. Don't know if any one can confirm that?

I picked up the same 27 Whooper over Rowsley heading NW. Also a Common Buzzard with a scarily Rough-leg like tail (the nearest i've seen on a Common). Pale head but the rest of the plumage/structure/flight said Common. Also a Sand Martin.

I obviously can't comment on the veracity of the Derbyshire sighting but there was a report of Grasshopper Warbler from Attenborough, Notts on 20th March, beating the county record by 10 days. http://www.attenboroughnaturecentre.co.uk/sightings/

A fair contender for a fully wild Barnacle Goose this afternoon; 1 leading a V of 13 Pink-feet WSW over Ramsley Reservoir at 16.28.

    Derbyshire County Birding

Yes, friends went up a couple of days ago and described it as 'a million'. However pick your day; its turned into a bit of a carnival at weekends with some people treating it like a visit to a public park, unsupervised and uninterested small children screaming and throwing sticks around, while...

Strange goings on t'moors; fifteen Golden Plover on top of Kinder today. A friend also reported a flock there last Wednesday. Presumably a reflection on the mild winter so far; a very early return to breeding habitat, or did they even leave last autumn?

I agree with you Daniel; the crossbills are certainly Commons, with classic bill shapes that are not even at the noticeably larger end of Common.
