Just had a Green Winged Teal flushed South with Teal flock from floodwater at Kilburn NR (just off the A609 at Rawson Green). Will have a look at Abbey Hill for it now. Matt

Hi everyone, 3 Whooper Swans (1 ad, 2 juv) just E of Swarkestone Bridge in fields just S of the Trent with 86 Mute Swans this afternoon. In addition 5 Little Egret and Green Sandpiper were at Barrow GP, pleasing sightings as this section was being heavily worked with lots of construction...

Hi all, Continuing the theme of breeding news, yesterday there was an Egyptian Goose pair with four juveniles at Barrow GP. With this species often breeding early it's possible they weren't bred here, but this site and surrounds has often been good for this species and is very close to Twyford...

Green Sandpiper in flooded field on Bakeacre Lane in Findern today - the ability of this species to happily find random bits of floodwater well away from obvious navigational points such as Rivers is always impressive. Best Wishes, Matt

Hi all, Had a lovely adult Med Gull at Shipley Lake today at 1200. The gull flock then seemed to disperse to feed on fields SW of Shipley View Lagoons. Had 24 Goosanders at Kirk Hallam Lake also (a crazy number for such a small site), and a Wigeon, strangely. Best Wishes, Matt

Hi all, Two of these Plastic Fantastics were at Markeaton Park today - is this an exotic (if of course an escapee) species or if a hybrid what do people suggest? Thanks, Matt

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi Anna, Not as far as I've heard - there has been a bit of a mini-influx of this species across the country in the last fortnight so the provenance is good. The Lowdham bird has been showing especially well, though as an immature male is slightly less 'Glossy' than an adult bird. Ogston has...

On a similar note, news of a claimed Hoopoe by a pair of farmers on a farm just off the B5020 between Radbourne & Mackworth 2-3 weeks ago reaches me. Have asked them to submit....as with all these records could be spot on or spot off, but the time of year is pretty bang on. First brood of 4 BH...

Interesting developments at Hilton GP - the three Tern rafts have been taken over by Black Headed Gulls, who have between 6-9 nests. A small group of Common Terns were being harassed off the raft by a BH Gull on a nest. So Hilton becomes a rare South Derbyshire breeing location for BHG, while we...

Hi all, Couple of bits of interest in the Trent Valley this morning.... 3 Pintail (2m, 1f) & 2 Shelduck at Barrow GP. 2 Shelduck also at Newton Solney. c95 Swans NW of Anchor Church - all the ones we positively id'd were Mute, but some were obscured by trees, sleet and then, bizarrely, a...

Hi Dan, I don't I'm afraid (I'm still in London most of the time). A small patch of woodland was introduced there in the last 5 years but these trees are still pretty small so probably wasn't them. From a selfish birding point of view (and temporarily ignoring the wider environmental...

Hi Dave, Re: the local hooligans at Poolsbrook, did somebody actively try and nick your gear or did you just get an instinct they were generally up to no good? Matt

Hi all, 17 Goldeneye on Church Wilne Ski Pit today, 5 Goosander at St Chad's Water and at least 1 Brambling in the mixed finch flock in the fields & hedgerows near the v shaped bend on Wilne Lane/Road. Best, Matt

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi all, Decent count of 8 Goldeneye on flood water around Barrow-on-Trent today (strange to think they're effectively diving in a farmer's field), 1 Goosander at Melbourne Pool, 41 Common Gull in one flooded field in Ticknall and c600 BH Gull at Etwall SF - again on floodwater. Trent Valley...

Whinchat in scrub at Dove Valley Industrial Park today - decent passage record. For those who haven't seen the DOS website yet, the curse of the impenetrability of the River Dove W of Scropton strikes again!! Matt

Hi all, Pintail (f) at Ambaston GP today with 6 earlyish Wigeon. Also Spotted Flycatcher in bushes near Conservation Pit at Long Eaton GP and for those of you who enjoy a good game bird breeding record (you know who you are!!) Pheasant has bred here this year. Matt

Hi all, 1 Greenshank (winter plumage) at Willington GP today, 1 Snipe and 3 Hobby. 2 Yellow Wagtail at Newton Solney - these could be either passage birds or residents (bred here in 2011 but none seen by us on a few visits this spring/summer until today). Best Wishes, Matt.

Female Red Crested Pochard at Long Eaton GP on the Conservation Pit today, and Tufted Duck (1) and Little Grebe (2) have very young broods there still. Also, Female Wheatear at Abbey Hill Flash on ploughed field just W of railway line and the pleasing sight of 2 Kingfishers right next to each...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi all, 2 Redstarts at Ingleby this afternoon (1 adult female, 1 juv male) along with a Spotted Flycatcher in the same bush, probably all on passage as in Riverside bush which seemed to be teaming with passerines a la the East Coast!!! 1 Lesser Whitethroat nearby also still and 2 Little Egrets...

Hi Arnie, Rose Coloured Starling. As Dan said Derbyshire has had past records at Sinfin and on one of the housing estates in Hilton (I think), so they are a rarity that you can find almost by accident and in unlikely places (not unlike Wryneck in that respect, which Sinfin also had a couple of...

Hi all, You know you reach that stage where you wonder if your local patch (Moorway Lane Pond) will ever throw up another patch tick...and then a RED KITE flies over as happened to me this morning! Strangely enough was seen off by, of all things, House Martins. I did a rough calculation...

Hi Sam, I had Spotted Fly at Locko today, in the small belt of woodland at the top of the hill which one of the public footpaths leads straight up to. Classic case of nothing seems to be moving or singing but if you give it a bit of time and let the birds come to you you'll see some good...

Hi John, Interesting - I saw big numbers (well into double figures) of Common Tern at Hilton earlier in the summer so I'm sure you're right. Coincidentally, a pair had 3 young chicks at one of the rafts at St Chad's Water earlier today. I'm not convinced about the Osprey tower myself - I...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi Clive, There was a very young Common Tern fishing there today (almost certainly bred at Willington GP), tho at the moment the shingle in the direction of Willington has all gone and the shingle on the confluence is much reduced - it clearly takes time for rainfall elsewhere to filter down...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Hi all, Another very productive little half hour at Newton Solney today (with the various shingle surviving the rain lashing of the last 24 hrs) with 2 Green Sand, 1 Little Egret, 6 Goosanders and 1 Greenshank. Funnily enough I had one of the latter species here just one day earlier in the year...
