Lovely sighting!

I had great sightings of the kingfishers at the Water Rail hide on Monday, but was perhaps more pleased with this one! As I was walking through the nature reserve from the Moors to the Flashes I saw this little beauty over the stream. I assume a juvenile due to the white tip on the beak?

Amy's Marsh

If you are visiting the Moors we have now cleared the islands in front of the East hide which is Amy's Marsh. The area is now ready for the hoped for influx of passage birds and especially waders. Thanks to all 13 of the Tuesday work party crew who helped out yesterday...
Next week we will cut the west bank of Amy's Marsh.
Thanks To Alan D. Andy A. Bobby P. Bob R. Ellen A. Graham L. Julie W. Keith M. Kim W. Paul M. Ray C. Tony B and me.

Presumably the same bird in the Flashes roost this evening. Also a 'new' ringed BHG seen - white darvic black letters TCP7.

Mike also reports from the Flashes yesterday evening:

Avocet 11, Dunlin, Little Ringed Plover 1 + 1 chick, Common Sandpiper, Snipe 2, Green Sandpiper 4, Curlew 14, Lapwing c.70, Shelduck juvenile, Gadwall, Teal. Black-headed Gull c.300, Common Tern 5 (including 2 juveniles)

Further to my post from yesterday re maximum counts for each wader species I have found this updated post from Phil Andrews from 3 years ago, which includes amended totals for Black-tailed Godwit, Avocet, Jack Snipe and Redshank plus the addition of the joint record for Greenshank.

This list now requires further amendment to include (a) the Baird's Sandpiper that graced the Flashes from 9-16th September 2016; (b) the 3 Woodcock found along the Salwarpe by Pete & Marjo Lewis on 11th December 2017; (c) the ever increasing number of Avocets present during the breeding season.

According to Phil's post from 16th June 2019 Dave Jackson counted a total of 87 birds at the Flashes that morning, made up of 44 adults and 43 young. Unless anyone knows otherwise I take it that this is the new record maximum count for Avocet on the reserve!

Thanks for updating this Andy. Will need to double check the position re Avocet - for WeBS and county recording purposes the counts are of adults and fledged juveniles only.

Only the listed figures the one which seems surprisingly low and could easily be bettered is Sanderling with a peak count of just three birds.

Have previously done similar exercises for wildfowl and gulls/terns - will repost and update as appropriate.

Flashes this morning. Spot Fly between dung heap and transmitter buildings. 2 Lesser Whitethroat, Garden Warbler opposite sailing buildings in first field. 2 Swift Over.
