Nikon Pro-Staff 7--Introduced. (1 Viewer)

I'm still using the 8x32 HG L because of the fast focus which I like :king: and no problem with the ergonomic for me ;)

I have spoken with Nikon Malaysia about 8x32 EDG for testing. Hope I can try it soon. For me the 8x42 EDG is still the best after my 8x32 SE. But I'm hoping for the 8x32 EDG will beat the 8x42 EDG for my needs 8-P

If I wanted to buy mid range binocular, I will mostly choose the Prostaff because of the ergonomic and also the color renditions. I used to have Monarch II and then tried the Monarch III for few hours. The dielectric coating gives a pleasant view of the III than the II.

But I will have another chance this coming 9th July to test it again before my talk about birding and digiscoping during the Sabah Forestry Open Day, they will officially launch the Prostaff series to the public hehehe.

Okay, you're selling the 8x32 LXL to finance an 8x32 EDG. Well, that makes sense, moving on up to the east side, you finally got a piece of the pie.

Boy, they are sure are taking their time sending you an 8x32 EDG to try. Seems like I remember you talking about this a year ago.

Will it be the original 8x32 EDG I or the new EDG II? Well, it doesn't matter since if the LXL's ergonomics work for you, the EDG II should be no problem. And if you have mechanical issues with the EDG I's focuser or diopter, Nikon will send you an EDG II. Then you'll be moving on up to the penthouse or at least a dee-lux apartment with a penthouse price. :)

I was planning to buy a Pentax 8x36 NV when Pentax had their rebates, but starting debating whether or not to try the Prostaff instead. Now I wish i had gone with the Pentax since I tried it and liked it (a birding bin in the hand is worth two on the 'Net). I don't like very many roofs, but I liked the NVs better than the uberoofs I tried.

Plus with the rebate, the Pentax would have cost only $120, about the price of a Schick Quattro shaver plus a six month's supply of blades. Unlike some Pentax 1-year warranty products, the NV comes with Pentax's Worry Free warranty. For buyers outside the US, that translates to: You buy 'em, we won't worry about 'em. :)

Have fun on Sabah Forestry Open Day!

I tried again for an hour the 8x42 Prostaff in the forest and the contrast reminds me of my 8x32 HG L hehehe which I like and the more I feel it on my hand the more I like about its ergonomic hehehe :king:

It is also sharp throughout its FOV and the bluish colour give my eyes a pleasant view compared with the Monarch II and III ;)

Yesterday, I was able to handle a Prostaff 7, 10x42, in a large sporting goods store. This is
the first time I have found them on the shelf.

I found that I liked the nice light weight, the rubber armor is very good, with nice balance and
feel. I only had a quick look inside the store, and the view was very nice to the edges.

This is not really much of a review, as I did not have time to evaluate. I do think Nikon has
placed a nice choice in that under $200.00 market. If you are looking for something in this
area, I like the quality and handling, and I would recommend.

Thanks for those comments, I've been wondering about how to spend that $10 Nikon coupon you sent me! However, I'm currently overstocked.com on 10x bins.

The 60* AFOV must seem nice on the tens, but the AFOV on the eights is only 50.4*. From past experience, that might seem claustrophobic. But then again, I tried the 8x36 Pentax NV, which has 6.5*, and there was almost no black space around the view. Go figure!

Not quite as "open" in the 6.5* 8x42 Celestron Regal though that bin had "barrel overlap" like a porro at close focus, which distracted me. But in general, I find the AFOV in roofs seems larger to my eyes than the same AFOV in porros. I know, I know, defies the laws of physics, but that's the ways I sees it.

Hopefully, our local sporstman's warehouse outlet will get a pair so I can "try before I buy". But they mostly carry tens.

Just dropped to 93* at 7:30 pm. What a scorcher!

Brock:

I am thinking you have a room fan, along with the AC. Just be thankful you don't have
the rolling blackouts as some parts of the country.

This Nikon binocular is for more of a mid to upper level user. You are using one of the finest
10x42 binoculars, and that is the SE.

It seems a bit of a stray off of subject. If you visit an airport, you know what they do to
hijackers !

Keep your cool.

Jerry,

Yes, I do have a fan and an A/C, though the A/C doesn't work as well as it did last year. I asked my dad to help me take it out of the window last fall. He was holding it while I went outside to remove the board I use to keep the A/C tilted a bit downward so the water flows out more easily and doesn't rust the insides. As I was opening the front door, I heard a loud CRASH!

He dropped the A/C out the window! The repairs will probably cost as much as a new A/C. So while it's cooler in my room than the rest of the house, it's not the "ice box" like it used to be. Wouldn't be an issue if I didn't have asthma, but as it is, the cooler the better.

I haven't used an airport since 9/11 so I wouldn't know about hijackers, but I do know what they do to former Secretaries of Defense :):

Just bringing this to the top. Yesterday, I was able to handle the Nikon Prostaff 7
10x42, in a large sporting goods store. I was able to compare these along side the Bushnell 10x42 Legend Ultra HD, as I felt this was a good test, of comparable optics.

I found that both of these optics were light in weight, and wanted to see how they
compare. As most know here, store tests are not very good as the lighting, and
the rest is not so good.
The Nikon Prostaff 7, is a bit longer than the Bushnell, as it is taller, but I found them
both to be both quite lightweight, and easy to handle. I was wondering about a comparison, as I do know Bushnell has an offer on the Ultra, and wanted to check them
both out, I was hoping the Legend would help me decide they were better, but that was not
the case.
I have found that I do prefer the Nikon, as it seems to deliver just a better and more
relaxed view.

I, do think that those in the under $200. market should certainly consider these.
I do find that I like this new model, and even when comparing to the Nikon Monarch, these
should also be considered.

Jerry

To all,

My last show I worked in Texas for Nikon I had these Prostaff 7s on the table with the Monarch 2 as well. The Monarchs flew off the table with that $50 mail-in rebate to make room for the Monarch 3. Nevertheless, consumers were giving the Prostaff 7 some serious thought. I don't disagree at all since the glass is wonderful when the price point is considered. If it weren't for the clear-out of the Monarchs, the Prostaff 7s would have sold very well. Just a thought!

Cheers,

Mike,

Hopefully you can clarify something as I think I understand it but hope you chime in.

Nikon now has the Prostaff 7 at just under the $200 price point. I am assuming it has aluminum prism coating but I do know that it is phasecoated. The next step "up" the performance ladder seems to be the Monarch 3 with its silver prism coating and nice, short conventional bridge design. Then we have the regular Monarchs with the dielectric prism coating? Is this correct? As Bob mentioned above I have seen next to nothing until recently about the new Monarch 3s. At the $230 price point they should sell very well.

I'm currently testing the 10x42 Prostaff 7 courtesy from my friend's shop and what I like about this model :
  1. Lighter than my 8x32 HG L and my friends Monarch series (II & III). Used it yesterday for few hours and sometimes I didn't realized it was hanging on my neck ...
  2. The colour is natural with a bit of contrast
  3. CA is well control than my friends Monarch series
  4. Ergonomic is excellent !
  5. Price is cheaper here than the Monarch series !

Before I used the Prostaff, I had tried few 10x42 but I couldn't get proper view because of the shake, but not with the Prostaff. Plus my EDG scope now mainly attached with DSLR, so with the 10x42, it does complement well for birding in the open habitat.

I had tried it briefly last time in the forest, but I will be heading up to the mountain soon and test it under the dark shade, rain etc !

Good birding :king:

I picked up a pair of ProStaff 7's and I thought they were great for my needs. We love to watch the ducks and geese on our lake and these bino's give us very good clarity and let us see well when the duck's roll in at sunrise and before sunset. My only problem is that I loaned them to a buddy to try out and he dropped them in a lake while duck hunting. I wish they had a flotation device!
Yes he paid me for them and I think this time I'm getting the Monarch 3's for the family!

Billy G.,

JIC your butterfingered friend gets a hold of the 3s, order one of these with the bins:

I just sold my Monarch 3s. The optics are pretty good but I've got better now, but what killed me was that small FOV.

Nikon does not sell this Prostaff 7 8x/10x42 in Japan BUT KOWA offerss essentiially the same binocular with their SV series with the added feature of hydrophobic lens coat. No matter as I think the current $50 instant rebate on the 1x42mm Prostaff 7 makes it a pretty compelling bargain for an entry full sized bino.

On a related note, I did just read that the Monarch ATBs will now designated the Monarch 5 with no changes other than the badging some time in the near future.
