Thanks.

Hi,

I'm afraid you come under the new member restrictions. whilst you've been a member for long enough you haven't made the required minimum of 10 posts in the forum section of the site.

I dare say there's plenty of time in which to make up the post number and then be able to cast your vote.

Yep, that ain't fair mods!

Must admit that I hadn't noticed them until it was pointed out. But they do appear to be jesses. I've contacted the poster to see if they can shed any light on the situation. If it's a captive bird still then it will be removed.

Jon has got back to me about the Barn Owl. It sounds as if it's a free flying bird. From the jeeses it's obviously at some time been in captivity but doesn't appear to be now. In which case the entry still stands.

Ah, just noticed there is already some discussion on the Barn Owl picture to which I added a comment only minutes ago. Wouldn't have had I know the situation was already clarified as a free flying ex captive still wearing jesses.

Looking at the final selection, I see what is meant by some shots breaching the qualification rules. One's actually in the air it appears ! No easy job moderating the comp, much easier to criticise though. What was nice to see was that if the right theme is chosen the entry is significantly higher. Why not just have anything goes all the time then there would be no problems other than selecting the final ones for voting ? On the other hand, instead of a vote why not just count who gets the most comments as the winners !

I disagree, Dave. It's a good idea to have varied themes to test the different skills required in photography, e.g. capturing a bird in flight requires different skills than using macro to capture an insect. It is a photography competition after all!

Fair point Jon but I don't think a bird hidden in the middle of a bush demonstrates any photographic skill nor does it demonstrate natures ability to camouflage.
Looking at the themes, in fairness most are "anything goes" but with the added emphasis being on monochrome, silhouette, humour (I have yet to see a funny one!) or with some Christmas greeting on .
January - Anything Goes
February - Camouflaged Birds
March - Birdscapes
April - Perched Bird
May - Birds and Water
June - Mammals, Retiles and Amphibians
July - Bird Silhouettes
August - Birds in Flight
September - Insects and Spiders
October - Humorous Bird Photo
November - Monochrome Birds
December - Holiday Card

Whilst they are photo competitions they're not just about the best technical photo taken with the best equipment - though in most there is a bias that way. We try to cater for a wide range of ability, camera equipment, locations as regards habitat and other interests beside birding in an attempt to encourage more members to participate.

Insects was requested a few years back and usually proves a popular subject. Likewise with Humorous Bird Photo - even if the subject matter isn't always funny, some of the captions/comments are.

Holiday Card was introduced as a theme for December can be a busy period for everyone, especially towards the end of the month, hence the subject and no voting booth.

We're always open to suggestions though for new themes as there's been little variation the last few years.

Apologies for the entries that made it to the voting booth that perhaps shouldn't have been included and especially to those members who's photos complied with the rules and should perhaps have been chosen instead. We usually allow a little latitude on the rules but I recall tightening them up a while ago for this particular theme but didn't apply them. I've been a little bit too busy on other projects this last month and haven't had much spare time to spend on Bird Forum. I rushed things getting the entries sorted and trying to get the voting booth in place in a timely manner.
