Upton Warren (17 Viewers)

Also at the Moors Pool late morning was a Lesser Black-backed Gull with a white ring 9N6C printed in red. There was a colon :)) between the 6 and the C, which shows as an angry face thus 9N6:C when I post! I've looked at what I think is the most recent spreadsheet relating to ringed gulls and can't find it listed on there.

Thanks to Mike W for tracing this bird - it was ringed as a full adult in Victoria Park, Glasgow on the 14th July 2019 with no subsequent reports until it was sighted at Upton.

The ringing project coordinator commented "...this is one of only a handful of UK "winter" records for our LBB's with over 2,500 colour ringed since 2012"

Worth keeping an eye out for other birds from this scheme such as CUJimmy.... ;)8-P

My first visit to the reserve for over three months this morning and it was looking great in the sunshine and a balmy 12C out of the brisk westerly breeze. Was blown away by the volume and quality of output from the recent work parties - particularly the hedge weaving at the Flashes and the ditch clearance along the west path at the Moors Pool. Unfortunately only a flying visit (under 2 hours) so apologises if I didn't stop to talk to anyone.

By my reckoning 54 species were seen on the reserve today - the combined sightings of myself, Andy P, Mike W, Tim, Carl and John Layj are as follows:

SAILING POOL
2 Oystercatcher, 2 GC Grebe, 7 Tufted Duck, 5 Mallard, 3 Coot, 2 Mute Swan, 1 Greylag Goose, Chiffchaff in subsong on the Hen Brook on the south side

FLASHES
5 Lapwing, Green Sandpiper (heard only), 4 Shelduck, 11 Coot, 13 Moorhen, 4 Mallard, 125 BH Gull (2000 in the roost including returning yellow ringed bird T81U), Raven over, Buzzard, fox in north field

HEN POOL
5 Teal, 1 Mallard, 1 Moorhen

NORTH MOORS
2 Mute Swan, 4 Gadwall

MOORS POOL
6 Curlew, 2 Oystercatcher (assume same as Sailing Pool), 35 Snipe, 58 Lapwing, 2 Mute Swan, 21 Greylag Geese, 37 Tufted Duck, 6 Shelduck, 20 Shoveler, 4 Gadwall, 1 Little Grebe, 23 Cormorant, 2 Grey Heron, 5 Little Egret dropped in, 6 Moorhen, Water Rail, Stonechat, Coal Tit, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Green Woodpecker, GS Woodpecker, 4 Herring Gull, 4 LBB Gull, c300 BH Gull

From the Flashes this morning Dave J repots:

4 Avocet, 2 Barn Owl, 10 Curlew, 2 Green Sandpiper, 8 Shelduck, 500+ Starling, Grey Wagtail, 20 LBB Gull, 2 Herring Gull, 2100 BH Gull

This is the earliest ever return date for Avocet, bettering the 10th February achieved in 2016.

From the Moors Pool this morning Lloyd reports:

2 Wigeon, 2 Pochard, 52 Lapwing, 7 Shelduck, GreyWagtail, Sparrowhawk over, Grey Heron.

Dave J further updates from the Flashes:

1 Snipe, 2 Skylark, 2 Chiffchaff including a singing bird (the earliest ever, exceeding the 18th February noted last year)
