The Andalucia Bird Society Malaga Team and some other good friends carried out the traditional January trip to the Sevillian farmlands around Osuna and Lantejuela.

There are wonderful places to drive across from the Costa del Sol to Osuna so we had Black Storks while driving through the Guadalhorce River Valley, and Griffon Vultures and a Sparrowhawk at the Guadalteba farmlands on our way to the meeting point.
The day was very foggy at Osuna and we had to wait until the mist cleared up. In the meantime, we had nice views of a Stone Curlew very close to the road and some surprising Bramblings bathing in a little paddle in the shade of an olive tree.
The flight of a lonely Great Bustard took us in front of the first flock composed of 26 individuals and then to another one with 17 members.
There was always a Red Kite, Common Buzzard, Marsh Harrier or Kestrel flying around us and we could even spot a beautiful little Merlin in a wheat field. The land was full of Calandra, Crested and Skylarks . Spanish Sparrows and Iberian Grey Shrikes also showed up on our way to Los Ojuelos, where there were the usual flocks of Golden Plovers, White Storks, Lapwings and Snipes, with also Water Pipits, a lonely Crane and a big flock of Black Kites possibly coming from the resident population around Marchena.
We also had a look at the Laguna del Gobierno from the hide to watch a Greater Flamigo, some waterfowl, Black-necked and Little Grebes, Cetti’s Warbler and a few White-headed Ducks.
The day ended up with a short encounter with a beautiful male Hen Harrier, next to the Laguna de la Ballestera.
