"diagnosis not seen" for genus names in the Key A through S (1 Viewer)

A fruitful visit to the Ornithology Library at Tring, where Alison Harding's guidance was much appreciated, enabled me to reduce the "Diagnosis not yet seen" list to 38 generic names (cf. this thread #129). Some of these may be held in Tring's huge Separates Collection, which I was only able to skim, and some are held at the NHM London, to be visited in due course. The Key has now been extensively updated. I was especially pleased to consult the Kelsos' papers on the Strigidae, the encyclopaedic works of Gregory Mathews and Mathews & Hallstrom, and Davis's Pan American Studies (1978). The latter was a short-lived journal and is extremely uncommon in collections, so the following correct citations may prove useful;

Complementary addition on Dissoura

Today's HBW Alive Key:
Dissoura
(syn. Ciconia Ϯ Asian Woolly-necked Stork C. episcopus) Gr. δισσος dissos double < δις dis twice < δυο duo two; ουρα oura tail; "20. August 1850. 1912) (Mark Brown in litt.). Diagnosis not yet seen (Cabanis 1850, Königlich Preußischer Staats-Anzeiger, Beilage i, col. 1484). Var. Dissura.
Thanks to the kindness of Stefan Weil, Universitätsbibliothek Mannheim, the OD itself, of the generic name Dissoura, allegedly by Cabanis, is no longer "not yet seen" ... but seen!

And it was, like I stated (in post # 122), found in Preußischer Staat-Anzeiger (No Königlich), in Nr. 240, published 1. September 1850, p. 1484 (see attached jpg of excerpt, and/or full page/s, in pdf format): "... unter dem Namen Dissoura zu einer neuen Gattung der Doppelschwanz-Störche." (in German Fraktur lettering, without italics on the generic name itself) ...

Enjoy!

Björn

Many thanks, Björn. The OD is very close to the "copy" indicated by Mark, but there are some interesting original errors ("mollin" for "Molina," and "Gen.," for "Gmel."), and I cannot quite make out whether Gmelin's specific name leucocephala is misspelled leucocphala or leucoephala. Anyone?

You´re welcome James,

To me it is misspelled: leucocphala ...

See attached close-up.

/B

PS. I would assume that an erudite person, like Cabanis, wasn't personally responsible for any of those/such typos!

Ornitologiya
Stepaniania Kashin 1982: 17, p.184
Now [here].
But -- as was to be expected, I guess -- there is no real diagnosis: just a statement that Pyrgilauda Bonaparte in the family of larks preoccupies Pyrgilauda Verreaux, followed by the introduction of the nom. nov., and a statement that the species are to be called Stepaniana davidiana, S. ruficollis, S. blanfordi and S. theresae.
"Stepaniania nom. nov., в честь советского орнитолога, кандидата биологическых наук Лео Суреновича Степаняна." (= Stepaniania nom. nov., in honour of the Soviet ornithologist, candidate of biological sciences Leo Surenovich Stepanyan.)

(They now have added many of the Ornitologiya issues in djvu format to their collection on this site; see e.g. [here].)

Laurent, Thanks for the Russian references. My list of unseen genera has now been cut down to just 29, mainly synonyms; of these four are still unverified (Hypsiphornis, Mesosericornis, Nyctipornis, Santaplonis), and another four are currently used (Carpospiza, Malcorus, Perdicula, Rheinardia). The search goes on.

Again, effusive thanks Laurent for Macdonald & Grant's paper on Smith including Malcorus. Fascinating, including the misspellings (Necrosyates, Occipiter, Perinopterus) (thanks also to Bjorn). Key updated.

So; what's still missing, James, at this point? Twenty-something ...

Give us a full, short, last list, I'm pretty sure some of the keen trackers here on BirdForum can find at least one, or a few, of them. And possibly save you some interminable library time!?

Björn, I don't mind visiting libraries (NHM London is next, when I can steel myself to undertake a journey on our third-world train services). However, for those who want a challenge here is my list of unseen generic diagnoses (you will have seen the names and references before, so apologies for the repetition).
