That's a strange coincidence Tom!
It certainly helps the with female we had in Beidaihe a few weeks ago that literally flew in from the coast and resided at the reservoir for a few days.
Like yours it behaved as a wild bird and looked immaculate but it certainly wasn't on my radar either!

Afternoon trip to Wafangdian today. This is the wintering area for cranes, storks and the like about 1.5 hours north of dalian. I have never been there other than December - February so the mystery of what would be there in June influenced my choice of destinations. The afternoon trip was a lovely present from my wonderful wife for Father's Day!
The place is slower in June than in winter. (although a trip in spring or fall migration time would really be worth it) One surprise was to find Common Redshank with flightless young walking around an old rice field. Another surprise was to see over 20 beautifully breeding plumaged Amur Falcons, I would have thought they should be more north at this time? Lots of Oriental Reed Warblers were over the reed areas calling so loud that it got irritating after a while. (recording below) One chased away a Cuckoo that landed too close. The caption for the picture of the two of them below should read, "not in my nest!"

Tom: Superb record.I keep hoping I will find it around my patch in Shenzhen but no luck so far. It is high on my list of bird priorities. interesting that Mark Andrews had a female at Beidahea short while ago.

Tom/Mark - they are awesome records of Cotton Pygmy Goose..! And great images, too. Superb. I didn't realise that this species is most likely to turn up in late Spring/early Summer.. I always imagined it would be fairly early if it was to turn up as a vagrant.

Additional 5% from me.I believe its the Juvenile Chinese sparrowhawk from its brown upper parts.
I would agree about the 5 egret day! I've not identified a cattle egret here yet. Do they always have the brown/orange coloring?
Also haven't seen a juvie wagtail, but they should be here - I'll have to look more carefully.
Liaoning Trip Report from May 2012
Thanks to Paul Holt for putting all of this info together and allowing me to post it here. If you are wondering about the shorebird situation in Liaoning in early May this should give you an idea! I took out some of the photos to bring it down into allowable size for this forum.
I am now near Vancouver in Western Canada. I will soon be visiting Florida and Central America. Hope to be back in Dalian on August 23.

Jinshitan Sea-farming Ponds August 24, 2012
Returned to China yesterday. Did a 3 hour tour of the area this afternoon to see what was about. Much more of the ponds are now destroyed. The vegetation is very thick and some of the trails aren't accessible. Spotting smaller birds is very difficult. I was left knowing that there was a lot more there than what I could positively identify. I stopped at another location first and found a minimum of 8 Dollarbirds on some power lines that stretch over a forested area. I was looking for some pictures of them before they head out.

I saw a squirrel today which is my first for China. I've seen Chipmunks in a Beijing park and near Dandong but never a squirrel. It took me a second to realize where I was (after having travelled all over for the summer) and how special it was. I have no photos becuase I watched it completely cross the road close to me before clueing in what I was seeing and where I was. It was average size and quite dark. I also saw a wild rabbit, many water snakes, and several vole/field mice along the trails. That's at least a 3 mammal day in Dalian!

Interesting that you only had juvie Chinese Egrets - have the parents left?!? Your picture shows a posture I haven't seen - did you see the bird moving?
(Walking around the rustic parts of our campus I saw easily more than a dozen Brown Shrikes - guess they've had excellent breeding this summer.)

Was the Squirrel like this Tom? - http://www.biolib.cz/en/image/id171600/ (they often look a bit darker and dingier) and the other a Tolai Hare? No native rabbits in China despite the Chinese Zodiac "year of the..."

Thanks for mentioning this, I hadn't remembered that. I've wondered about the ones I've seen, and not been sure they were hares, but perhaps they were juveniles and the size threw me off.

Tom: the LH butterfly in your #614 is an Asian Comma Polygonia c-aureum.
That in the RH shot is probably the Asian/Chinese Yellow/Xuthus (take your pick!) Swallowtail Papilio xuthus.
