Blog.

Hi Mike, greetings: it's always very interesting to know how, when and as ring anywhere. Currently many groups banding everyone makes attaching the chronicles in these photos and detailed information about the field day.
Specifically in the UK is http://btoringing.blogspot.com/, where it appears the activity of many groups of rings.
I make this suggestion because perhaps many people may find in your field days with valuable information.
I encourage you in your work and take to send a cordial greeting from Spain.
Fernando.

and the ringer in chief saw a Barn owl on the A1 between Macmerry and Haddington.

On the same day a brambling was on our lawn; 70+ linnet were feeding at the rape bait, with a kestrel present at this site on Sunday.

A walk round on Saturday afternoon found meadow pipit foraging everywhere, with 100+ accounted for at any one time. A pair of stankie were on the curling pond. Golden plover were counted at 22 again, and 2 pairs of peewit were on territory. That last is two pairs more than normal.

On Sunday a pair of siskin were at our peanut feeder and in the evening a swallow was (apparently) feeding by the steading.

Mainly forgetting corvids, game birds, gulls, pigeons and tits.

That is the winter mist net ringing programme finished. I will prepare a summary in due course. Linnet catching may continue. However. although a flock is present, they are proving difficult to catch, preferring to feed in the wild bird cover rather than on the rape bait.

Mike.

Here are the total catches for this winter at our three mist netting sites. Below these I have listed average catches for the previous six winters (not including this winter). Below that there are totals for those previous six winters. Apologies for the extended format but this site does not do columns well.

Not a good winter overall. Our main interest is in characteristic farmland granivores. Amongst those we were pleased to see a recovery in yellowhammer catches from only 41 ringed last year. We also caught significantly more tree sparrow at one site, so now have two sites with healthy populations. While numbers caught at the original of those two sites fell sharply, I think the population is still healthy, but now tends to feed more at the nearby farm steading, so catches are less frequent.

Individual birds of interest :
the first female sparrowhawk the ringer in chief has ever caught in a mist net - they are usually too big and make their escape rapidly;
a German ringed blackbird that we have now controlled three winters consecutively. Where does it spend the summer ?

Mike.
