had wondered if they were migrant or resident here, now I know.

Guess either is still possible. Painted Ladies + Clouded Yellows can both breed here but apart from a handful of the latter on the Dorset coast neither successfully overwinters here so reliant on fresh immigration each year.

Great find anyway. When I was in Crete last October we found one of these where we parked our vehicle feeding on a piece of Fennel hanging over the road.
