Doves and Pigeons

Didn't really think these would feature but there are some cracking birds when you look at the family.

Cloven-feather Dove - Riviere Bleue, New Caledonia
Rose-crowned Fruit Dove - Darwin, Australia
Sombre Pigeon - Lore Lindu, Sulawesi
Great Cuckoo Dove - Weda, Halmahera
Spinnifex Pigeon, near Uluru, Australia

Auks

My nieces and nephews favourite bird is the puffin and I knew a few adults who also have this as a favourite.

Black Guillemot - Svalsbard, Norway
Spectacled Guillemot - Hokkaido Japan
Little Auk - Svalsvard, Norway
Puffin - Farne Isles, UK
Razorbill - Bempton, UK

Cranes

Cranes are among the most elegant birds on the planet. We were luck to see the Siberian Crane at Bharatphur around 20 years ago but haven't dug out the photo yet.

So most of this batch come from Japan

We have
Japanese (Red-crowned) Crane - dancing in the snow on Hokkaido;
White-naped Crane - Kyushu
Hooded Crane - Kyushu
Sandhill Crane - USA
Black Crowned Crane - Awash,Ethiopia

I think you have two Salvin’s albatross amongst these 5, no white-capped (strict sense) or Buller’s
But let’s be honest they are all fantastic birds!

Looking back at photos from almost 10 years ago with few labels and trying to ID and link back to my notes means I've probably got a couple wrong on these and I suspect a couple of others.

Finches

I know that strictly speaking not all same family but I've picked photos of birds named finch.

My favourite is Gouldian Finch - near Katherine, Australia;
Large-footed Finch - Savegre, Costa Rica
Crimson Finch - Darwin, Australia
Bullfinch (grey -bellied) - Hokkaido, Japan
Cut-throat Finch - Awash, Ethiopia

Coursers

My first courser was Temmick's, which I spotted in Gambia when out with Solomon Jallow, who said I had beautiful eyes, Sarah still laughs at the memory.

Toucans

Toucans, Toucanets and Aracari are usually bright colourful and noisy but getting close to photograph them isn't always easy.

Not necessarily the most beautiful but our current favourites are

Plate-billed Mountain Toucan - near Mindo Ecuador;
Green Aracari - Guianan endemic at Iwokrama
Collared Aracari - Arenal, Costa Rica
Yellow-throated Toucan - Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Toco Toucan - Iguasu, Brazil

Broadbills

Sarah asked for Broadbill but African Green Broadbill from Bwindi, Uganda I only got a very poor record shot which I can't locate and Rufous-sided from Kakum, Ghana I also can't find. Didn't photograph Dusky or Long-tailed

Very wonderful photos, plus I suspect each one carries memories.
You might assemble your trip notes and photos into a book or an on line biography. In these days that may be the closest we can get to actually seeing the parts of the world which you've so spectacularly recorded.

Indeed a truly remarkable collection, David. Certainly brought back a few memories for me of some of the astonishing things in existence on this Planet. I wouldn't have mentioned it but for the sake of the fact it was my Bird of the Year in 2012 when I spent three months as a guide in a Bornean rainforest, but its Black-and-Yellow Broadbill in plate 50, not t'other way round! :t: Like little cuddly toys , they are.

here is what i got for the family of bulbuls, the most beautiful songsters.

1- white spectacled bulbul, Pycnonotus xanthopygos, form my garden.
2- white-eared bulbul, Pycnonotus leucotis, also form my garden, but introduced in Jeddah west of Arabia.
3- red vented bulbul, Pycnonotus cafer, also introduced in Jeddah.
4- red whiskered bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus, from Mauritius.
5- Yellow vented bulbul, Pycnonotus goiavier, from Bali, Indonesia.
6- sooty-headed bulbul, Pycnonotus aurigaster, Central Java, Indonesia.

First up is two for the price of one - an Arabian Bustard with a carmine Bee-eater on board - Awash, Ethiopia
Houbara Bustard - Lanzarote, Spain
Kori Bustard - one of the heaviest flying birds, Serengeti Tanzania
White-bellied Bustard - Yabello, Ethiopia
Black-bellied Bustard - Kruger, South Africa
