We're quite fortunate (although my other half needed a bit of persuading) to have a large Hornet nest in full swing in the eaves of our bungalow. We don't loiter underneath it and have learned to make sure the windows are closed when we have lights on in the evening...but they seem content to get on with their lives and don't cause a problem.
Anyhow, these Hornets seem to be carrying white items out of the nest and dropping them off over the road... some waste matter I presume, but the number carrying them seems excessive, I'd say 70% of them. Any ideas? I heard that their faeces are black in colour and more liquid than solid?
We don't have any vermiculite in the loft to my knowledge
Btw: Do Hornets feed on rotting fruit in the late summer/early Autumn... do they get rowdy and drunk like Common Wasps? I've met a few Hornets over the years, and none have seemed aggressive in any way.
cheers,
Andy
