At what age do Firecrests attain their adult plumage? I ask because I believe I saw a firecrest today in immature plumage as in figure 9 page 1343 BWP is this possible?

Should be in pretty much adult plumage now.

Yep, but working on the basis that it was a bird that had a supercilium but no yellow/orange crown patch (as would be expected of a juvenile Firecrest) - Goldcrests don't have former, and as with Firecrest, none left still in juvenile plumage now.

Not a goldcrest, thanks for your suggestions, if only the photos had shown a bit of detail, have to put it down to an unidentified blob

I think that's the outer tail feather being translucent - light showing through it, not actually white.

A very grey bird, though!

Still a tad intriguing! Goldcrest maybe with moult/head feather issues?

The sun was behind the bird and shining into the camera which made it difficult to even see the bird at times.
