Late March and early April is when we can expect shorebirds to start moving through. However, given the high elevation and lack of large bodies of water, shorebird migration in West Virginia is pathetic compared to the coastal regions or even the Midwest. Nevertheless, that makes the few shorebirds we do get more exciting to find, and there’s always the expectation that something really rare could show up.

This afternoon I found a pair of good shorebirds for this area.

319. Pectoral Sandpiper

This morning I found an early migrant close to where I live.

320. Blue-headed Vireo

Then I went over to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia to chase a regional rarity.
