From the Flashes this morning Andy P reports:
The first returning Snipe of the "autumn", 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 3 Oystercatcher, 2 Common Tern, 2 Shelduck + 4 young.

2 Curlew, 15 Lapwing, many Avocet (adults & juvs), 5 Little Ringed Plover, 4 Oystercatcher, Peregrine on the masts.

Lost binocular lens cap
Good evening.
I think I saw a biocluar lens cap on the metal gate half way down the track to the flashes as we were leaving. If anyone sees it could you please leave it in the hide, it was lost by a friend I brought with me on Saturday who did not tell us he had lost it until we got home.
I will pop down on Saturday to pick it up if it’s still there.

Red Kite over at 10:05am. Also 2 Black-tailed Godwits, Snipe, 2 Curlew, 4 Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 65+ Avocet (including juveniles), 25 Lapwing, 6 Shoveler, 2 Shelduck + 4 young, Peregrine, Kingfisher, a new brood of 9 or 10 Tufted Duck plus a brood of 2 older ducklings on the third flash.
Another brood of 5 Tufted Duck on the Sailing Pool.

Gadwall + 6 ducklings, 6 Tufted Duck + 2 young, 2 Little Grebe + juvenile, 2 GC Grebe, 2 Common Tern + 3 chicks, 17 Lapwing.

Work party at Moors Tuesday 16th July
Tomorrow we will be clearing along the causeway at the Moors. Also we will be clearing cleavers and other rank vegetation that have covered the Hawthorn saplings along the east road and track at the Moors.
If you can spare a couple of hours tomorrow morning that would be appreciated.

just a few pics from this evening. Animals just posed for the camera .interesting behavior on the Moors this evening a Cormorant resurfaced from a dive next to a flock of Coot the flock totally spooked and run across the water to the nearest island.

The above Gull was ringed at Rehbach Gravel Pit near Leipzig, Germany as a nestling on 8/6/18. The sighting on 20th June this year was the first since it was ringed.

Another ringed Black-headed Gull deriving from the Marsh Lane scheme sporting black ring with white code 2BFF at the Flashes last night as per Mike W.

At the half way point of July the monthly list has reached 83 species with the year list advanced to 134 courtesy of Dave J's Marsh Tit. July records an average of 96.83 species with a peak of 100 (2014) and a low of 94 (2017).
Plenty of scope for the remainder of the month with potential additions including (year ticks in bold):
Garganey, Pochard, Pheasant, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Spotted Redshank, Ruff, Whimbrel, Greenshank, Wood Sandpiper, Yellow-legged Gull, Black Tern, Feral Pigeon, any owls, Yellow Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Whinchat, Redstart, Mistle Thrush, Garden Warbler, Willow Warbler, Coal Tit, Spotted Flycatcher, Nuthatch, Chaffinch, Yellowhammer

Tuesday 16th July evening session
The lack of rain has now caused the water level to drop 6cm below the WWT desired level of 0.4. This has caaused a few prime feeding zones to dry out luckily the Avocets in those areas are now fledged. However without any considerable rain we will lose areas that provide sustenance to passage waders.
One very noticeable aspect of yesterday was the low numbers of roosting BHG. Apart from the breeding colony there are very few birds coming into roost. The larger gulls are kept away by the protective Avocet parents but maybe the ever present peregrine family with its preference for young BHG might be a reason for other blackheds steering clear of the Flashes
FLASHES:-

Confirmation from Ben Dolan that the Black-headed Gull sporting a black leg ring with white code 2CAT noted at the Flashes on the 20th June 2019 was ringed at Marsh Lane NR on the 7th June 2017; there have been no other sightings of this bird.
At updated list of ringed gulls recorded at Upton Warren is attached.

From the Flashes yesterday evening Mike W reports:
15 Curlew (including a very fresh juvenile), 1 Black-tailed Godwit, 3 Green Sandpiper, 2 Common Sandpiper, 2 Oystercatcher, 4 Little Ringed Plover, 1 Snipe, 4 juvenile Shelduck, 1 Tufted Duck brood with 6 young.
A new juvenile ringed Black-headed Gull was present - yellow ring with black "TAMR" - which is believed to have originated from Poland. It bird was also present on Wednesday and is our 19th different ringed BHG so far this year.
Also 4 broods of Tufted Duck on the Sailing Pool (5:5:4:1) along with 2 juvenile GC Grebe.
