UK Ospreys 2005 (1 Viewer)

I didn't think Loch Garten opened until the end of April so that the birds get chance to settle in (why they do this I don't know)....Go to Loch of the Lowes, as they say there, "We are open whether the Ospreys are here or not". Better viewing as well I find.

Are the Ospreys expected to be back at Garten when they open on the 1st April?

The first osprey (White EJ) arrived back at Loch Garten on March 26 last year. There then followed an interesting event where White EJ had a bit of fornicating with a male osprey which was later identified as her ex-husband!!

The new husband (Henry) turned up on April 4 and normality was resumed!

Agree I find Loch of Lowes better viewing and I guess less commercialised than Loch Garten but I guess we all have to make a living and it is put to good use by RSPB. Red squirrel in both areas as well if you are lucky enough to spot them. I could be biased though in that I can get to L. of L. in 90 min or less. Noticed last year that SWT had extended car park and built a marvellous new hide correction 'classroom' so L of L may also get crowded but everyone deserves the chance to see these birds.

According to the RSPB web site Loch Garten opens early April ! Presume that will be in the first full week?

Hi,

As an aside, what's the latest date for Osprey as I'm due @ Loch Garten late September this year - will I be too late ?

Thanks

You may be a little bit late then. My last Osprey last year at Loch Leven was on the 12th September and the 15th the year before.

The news has just broken that three ospreys have returned to Rutland Water in the last 24 hours.

That seems good news. Hope all the batchelor males find partners this year!

Great news, the spring migration seems to be picking up well, here's to a good easter birding B :) B :)

Latest news from RSPB at Loch Garten

"Loch Garten Osprey aficionados will recall that EJ arrived on our nest on 25th March last year and on 24th March in 2003. Many prayers have been said across the world for her safe return this year and also that of Henry. Whilst we wait impatiently for the arrival of the first bird on our nest we are grateful to The Highland Foundation for Wildlife for providing us with the following news.

Firstly, we have received confirmation of the first adult osprey back on its nest in the Strath - and it is none other than 'Orange VS' who was observed nest building last Saturday. He obviously took advantage of our 'Indian Summer' last weekend to make excellent progress on his migration. We wish him well in his breeding attempt this year.

Secondly, we are thrilled by the news that in 2004 no less than 184 breeding pairs of ospreys were recorded north of the border. The breeding sites of a number of pairs were not located and it is therefore probable that the total Scottish population is close to 200 pairs. "

Good news for osprey lovers of Strathspey! Look out for more arrivals in the next week or so. I'll be scanning in the area over the next week whilst off work.

Hi all, out birding on Sat 19th March and watched an Osprey on the river late afternoon between Doune and Callender (nr Stirling) which I thought was very early.

Ooh I am so glad I logged on. I am an Osprey fanatic getting very broody especially about Henry and EJ any sightings please let me know. Have looked at Loch Garten tonight web camera is up and running but of course it was dark at 8.00 so no pictures. Anyone know how I can read BF and watch webcam at same time? because I know which one will win. Your TV diary might not even get written.

Loch Lowes birds are possibly easier to see if you are up there, but I didn't find their site very user friendly last year no regular updates and camera seemed to far away from nest, I did not get very good pictures.
