Mallorca 2019 (1 Viewer)

Sounds like you three are having too much fun without me, I would have loved to have been there with you on one of Mallorca’s finest walks, it’s stunning scenery.
I agree about the parking, it’s shocking that no solution is offered. Buying wine is the best thing to do but shouldn’t really be the answer. It’s not like you can walk to the site, cars are essential unfortunately.
Mike

Hi Dave
I visited the back of the salt pans near Sa Barrala just before I left but there was no sign of any Common Cranes.
The only ones seen this autumn as far as I know are the three that Mike and I had passing overhead at Porto Colom and one other sighting elsewhere.
It’s worth a go soon, they should be there in the near future.
Good luck, Mike

An early morning walk through Boquer Valley this morning when I had the place to myself. Blue Rock Thrush and Balearic warbler the star turns. A flick of around 40+ seeing and plenty of black redstarts also good to see. As I was leaving at 1pm several hundred starlings were gathering in the field below the finca. On to Can Cuarassa where I saw absolutely nothing. Final stop at Maristany, lots of black winged stilts and a group of stone curlew on the far side. We’ve had spectacular lightening tonight in Port de Pollença but thankfully all is now peaceful

Airport run is always fun as chance to walk around Garden City (Cuidad Jardin).
Bird seen included 4 Turnstones, 3 Sandwich terns, Stonechats, Yellow legged and Blackheaded Gulls, Cormorants, Little Egrets and Cattle Egrets.

On return a quick visit to the New hide and Tower at Albuferata.
Birds seen included 80 Flamingoes, 4 Stone Curlews, 3 Greenshank, Common Sandpiper, Crag Martins.
Bluethroat seen at Tower.
Woodchat Shrike reported but did not reappear.

La Gola reported Goldcrest seen today.

Another pleasant day out with Geordie Dave. We started at the Depuradura which was very quiet bird wise. Birds seen includes Osprey , Red kite, Kingfisher, Crag Martin, White wagtail, Green and Common sandpipers, Ringed and Kentish plover, Glossy ibis as well as the usual waterfowl.
From here we moved on to S’albufera. Highlights here included Spoonbill, Glossy ibis 4, Ruff, Spotted redshank, Greenshank, Ferruginous duck as well as the usual.
Thanks for your company Dave. Have a safe journey home.

Heading back to Newcastle today after a week that’s gone far too quickly. Been out with Kevin most days, great company as always. My thanks also to the two Mikes, Montier and Swiss, for the days out at Albufera and Mortix. Just shy of 100 species seen this week. The highlights probably the 4 hawfinches and groups of up to 6 crossbills at Son Real and the spoonbill and ferruginous duck at Albufera yesterday. It’s a year ago this week that the red flanked bluetail turned up at La Gola and with these winds we might be due another special bird. I’m back in 3 weeks time, if it can hold on until then.

Thanks for all your posts David, glad you had a great time and saw some special birds.
Thanks also for your company and if any rarities appear, I will try to keep them nailed down until you get back.
Safe trip home.
Mike

I was joined by Mike Swiss today at the Son Real hide for what was to become an excellent days birding around the North of the island.
On the walk to the hide Mike had Wryneck calling. At the hide we had Hawfinch 2, Crossbill 4, Black redstart, Robin, Song thrush, Blackcap, Cetti’s warbler, Chiffchaff, Firecrest, Goldcrest and Great tit. On the walk back to the car park we had 4 Hoopoe and 2 more Goldcrest.
Next stop was S’albufera. The walk in produced 20+ Night heron. Then from the Sa Roca hide we had 7 Glossy ibis, Curlew, Spoonbill, Little egret, Grey heron, Purple gallinule and the usual array of ducks and waders. We couldn’t understand why everything kept taking flight until we we finally saw the culprit. A fine female Merlin. The only different species seen from Cibollar hides were 5 Spotted redshank.
From here we went to the tower at Albfereta and had 2 Great egrets, Greenshank and great views of Bluethroat. Moving on to the new hide we saw Green and Common sandpiper and 87 Greater flamingos.
Another great day in great company.

These are the days

Just a few photos of an excellent week in Mallorca. Roll on the end of November when I'm back again
David

Many Crag Martins feeding in the rain.

A cold and windy afternoon around s'Albufera and Albufereta today. The highlights were about 40 Flamingos and 5 Stone Curlews at Albufereta, and a Spoonbill, one Stone Curlew, 9 Glossy Ibises and two Greylag Geese (new for me in Mallorca!) at s'Albufera. Lots of water in the lagoons, so a much reduced shoreline for waders (only a Green Sandpiper, a Common Snipe and two Spotted Redshanks present besides the Lapwings and Stilts).

Great photos Mike and Kevin and some super birds.
I hope they will still be around when I get back but I’m here for two more weeks yet.
Hope we can meet up again then.
Mike
