Tuesday's work party

Many thanks for all 23 of the crew today.
We have now completed phase 1 of the Grassland Project.

1. The old broken down fox fence was removed from the south side of the East hide. This was hard graft and certainly more difficult than we realised. Once it had been removed the dead bramble was then raked out. The southern stretch of bramble was also removed.
The resultant habitat is now a more open grassland and in time will benefit waders and waterfowl. . Immediately the surprise attacks from sparrowhawk will now be reduced. The old stock fence will remain until a god grassy sword develops. We can also control where the cattle go. The brash from this work was piled up to form habitat pilesand also bramnle was planted along the eastern boundary where a thick bramble / blackthorn scrub thicket is now getting established, we will enhance this to have a more viable scrub than the one we have removed.

2. The willow carr that has been developing in the reeds north of the hide was removed and brash burned.
The area was the last patch of reeds that our wintering bitterns used in 2014.. it is very wet and water rail and Cetti's warbler thrive in it. Hopefully it will now be inviting to Bitterns once again in.the not too distant future .

3. The stock fence posts next to east hide path were realigned and secured.
