Tuesday 11th and Tuesday 18th Work party FLASHES
For the next 2 Tuesday's we will be working at the FLASHES .
The work to be carried out will include:-
Installing 2 Shelduck nest boxes.
Brush Cutting parts of sedge and reed beds.
Hedge trimming.
Clearing channel in front of hide.
Generally readying the site for the forthcoming breeding season.
Sorry for any inconvenience to anyone birding..if you sre birding I suggest you get to the FLASHES before 8 or go to the Moors and the birds will come over from the Flashes at 9.

Hi John
Where are you putting the shelduck next boxes? I looked them up! Are you putting in the buried boxes with the tubes to the water?
I hope it works - I saw shelduck mating at the moors yesterday! I really like them
Putting them away from the water against fox fence by sewage works. Not quite sure where 2nd one is going yet. I will put pics on my Twitter site :t:

The last few weeks of 2019 saw two long-term "blockers" fall with records of Bearded Tit and Bewick's Swan. Looking at all species recorded on the reserve with five or more records, the Top 20 blockers are as follows (ignoring the "twitchability" of records):

Today's work party at the FLASHES
Many thanks to all 24 of the crew today...The weather was not pleasant and all the tasks were pretty heavy going..the weather making the going even harder. But Tony's cake was worth the toil:t:
Tasks included:-
1.Heavily pruning a section of the overgrown public footpath hedgerow. The going was tough breaking through years of dead bramble and hawthorn before getting to the living hedge. We are lowering the height of the hedge for 2 reasons...firstly to reinvigorate the hawthorn and secondly to lessen the surprise attacks from Buzzards on the breeding birds. Making the area more open means that wader parents can see predators approaching and have more time to repel them.
2. Dug drainage channel in front of avocet hide. Tbis removes flood water from the downstairs floor and also provides a feeding area for waders
3. Installed 2 shelduck boxes , hopefully will encourage them to breed within the confines of the fox fence instead of running the gauntlet of breeding outside when foxes will take their young.
4. Cut a large area of reeds on the west and north side of
The 3rd Flash..this will now allow viewing into the 3rd Flash and also with the aid of grazing cattle provide feeding areas for waders and duck and hopefully stunt the growth of the reeds.
