Nikon D6 coming in 2019 (1 Viewer)

NR reports D6 with Wi-Fi (11a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth, GPS. Not before time. Wonder if it comes with anti-virus and firewall?

20.8MP, Distinct lack of IBIS, 4K/30p, 14fps

https://m.dpreview.com/news/7615938...tm_medium=marquee&utm_campaign=traffic_source

Same? 20.8MP CMOS sensor.
Focus points down to 105, though now all cross type which apparently allows a type of eye-AF.
Only 15 central focus points are available at f8.
Same 180K metering sensor.
A blazing 14fps.
4K/30p video.

Did I mention no IBIS ?!

I think this spec sheet leaves a lot of wiggle room for Canon and Sony .......

Is this the knockout blow camera to reign over Canon and Sony for it's entire model life cycle .......... ? :brains: :h?:

I can't wait to see an AF shootout between the three ....... :cat:

Looking at these 'advances' I'm left a bit deflated for the prospects of a D500S now ...... Nikon didn't exactly elbow aside a whole stack of market space ...... :-C

Now, where did I put the chocolate ..... :eat: o:)

Nikon says "The release date or the supply could be delayed due to the influence of the coronavirus infection". So what?! Many disappointed comments on NR.

Check out the Samsung S20 Ultra. Beats the D6 on so many features. 8K video etc...

No D500 update... :(

I'm sure the D6 will be a wonderful tool for Pro sports shooters etc, and really people in either camp N or camp C are there for the duration and wouldn't be swayed by an individual model over the system's utility in its entirety for them. I think the real test for Nikon is how many of these units they shift to independent Pro's upgrading from D4S, D5, etc. The improved image transfer abilities are a nice carrot - but is it tasty enough ? :eat:

I'm disappointed in Nikon as a company for Nikon as a company for setting the bar so low - especially as this model iteration will probably have to serve 4-6 years before update and by then an update may be irrelevant as the world has gone mirrorless. It is possibly among the smallest incremental updates to a major line that I can recall in modern times .....

Canon has walked through the open door somewhat, and it's going to be very interesting how the AF performance of the big (3) pan out. Nikon has got a lot hanging on it, but I can't see any 'revolutionary' steps being taken (from an admittedly high base) with such 'minor' 'upgrades'. Will it really eye-AF in a sports situation ? what about on birds ?

That CaNikONY would 'update' their flagships has never been of any real doubt in my mind ....... the big question for me is who really wants the DX PRO crown ?

Canon seems to have created some market headroom but has shown no will up to this point or intention to change that (they have been happy to leave the 7D MkIII sitting on customer's wishlists for nearly ~5 years while handing the crown to Nikon on a platter). Nikon has the crown (as far as stills go) but has no real headroom or technological platform (same old 180K metering sensor) for further improvements. Sony has always had the opportunity but strangely hasn't taken it up (the forever expected DSLR style ergos, of a perpetually imaginary a7000) and is more squashed for pricing freedom on it than the traditional DUO. Is there any hope the big 3 will seriously duke it out for the DX PRO crown? Maybe everyone is off to Mt. Olympus ..... ? :cat:

Well, this is Nikon's 'excuse' as revealed in this DPReview interview with Nikon's manager UX Planning Dept. https://m.dpreview.com/interviews/6739481235/ces-2020-interview-nikon-we-are-at-a-transitional-stage

It's clear to me (from products offered and planned, directions publicly announced, and candid or otherwise informative interviews) , that none of the big 3 have a really good handle on bird photographers ........... DX is just seen as a poor man's cousin - rather than a high performance way to extend range while keeping weight somewhat in check :flyaway:

It is disappointing that it looks so incremental. will the improved AF be worth it? I guess shootouts will try to show. Though if I wanted a pro-level Nikon, I'd go for a 100k or less shutter d5 for under $3k nowadays (auction, not buy it now) or even a d4s, though this is all personal use not for a business.

I have a really hard time spending any new money on Nikon. I've not seen evidence that a sports-oriented Z is in sight, and there's nothing new compelling for me in the dslr lineup. If I did not like the 500/5.6 pf so much, I might have switched already to the a7iv + 200-600. Though I need to take the "grass is greener with the other brand" with a grain of salt too.

If the AF is really better than even the AF of the D5 - and I don't doubt it is - it'll be a killer. And just like the AF of the D5 led to better AF in other models, I think there'll be a DSLR with higher resolution with improved AF sometime later this year.

It'll be interesting to read what the likes of Brad Hill make of the new D6. He's waiting for one ...

I have the excellent Olympus E-M1 mirrorless cameras and they are great in many situations but out in bright sunlight or with the sun behind me I dislike the electronic viewfinder which will auto change in brightness based on the amount of light hitting it. An optical viewfinder works much better in this situation.

The D6 finally adds built-in GPS which has long been a peeve of mine as this has been omitted since the first D series DLSR cameras and Nikon has provided this only with the $300 Coolpix AW and the $500 D5300 cameras - go figure.

The big gain is in autofocus performance which will be great for sports shooters and wedding photographers. The 20MP sensor greatly limits the value of the camera for me with wildlife shooting. With a DX level of cropping of a subject one is left with what amounts to a 8.9MP camera so a longer and heavier and more expensive lens is needed to compensate for this shortcoming.

I can use the light and compact 500mm f/5.6 PF lens on my D850 and have the same usable image area as I would get with the 600mm f/4 lens on a D5 or D6 camera. So I would need a 5 lb heavier lens and to carry a 5 lb tripod with its 3 lb gimbal head out in the field, and when on a boat the tripod is not even viable unless it is a stationary poontoon boat.

I would love to have a 30MP version of the D850. I wish that Nikon would fix how it implements medium and small Raw file processing by the D850 without such a great loss of image quality. The D500 is a great camera and provides a DX 20MP sensor output but I do not like carrying a camera around that does not work with my FX lenses or that has the crop factor all the time. With the 200-500mm lens on the D500 I get the view angle of a 300mm or longer lens and I found that to be too long too much of the time.

Oh Where Oh Where Art Thou D500S ...... ?

B :)It's interesting to see that over on DPReview that the 'development announcement' for Canon's highish res proish-type R cam has generated 2.5x the comments of the actually officially announced and to be delivered in a ~month or so D6. It seems the release lacks 'buzz' ....

Unless they were flat out getting the release done in time for the Olympics, then it is a focused machine that no doubt will be a perfect tool for the PRO's it's intended for, however with CanONY arguably offering more flexible cameras, I think it somewhat jams Nikon up with a puzzling lack of market space for the rest of it's range.

Nearly 4 years ago Nikon twinned the D500 with the D5. The D500 turned out to be a fantastic DX tool. However the game has moved on from there (even though Canon is happy to completely abdicate the segment from real competition). I really hope Nikon has been secretly working behind the scenes to come up with a D500S to 'twin' with the D6, and I hope it uses a Nikon fettled 26MP DX sensor. If Nikon was to pass on the D6 upgrades - AF system, Expeed 6 processor, full 11fps, and WiFi and transfer upgrades along with twin CFe slots they'd have a great stills camera that would clearly lead the pack.

The question is then what would Nikon do about the D500S's video capability? What could it do within the slim market space it has left itself? Pretty much nothing - leaving it as a specialist stills machine ? , or also add a hybrid live view video capability like the D780 ? Would it do 4K60p on a similar 1.5x crop.basis? Would it remain sub $2K ?

You can see that the industry's Full Frame mania leaves a squashed space for PRO DX machines. Sony's is perpetually vapourware, Canon has just given up, and Nikon has been resting on the D500 laurels .......

C'mon Nikon - show us that you really want the crown and set a higher bar with a killer updated 26MP D500S (with hybrid abilities) that will buy you a good 4 years to street the competition, and give you vital time to suss this Z mount high performance AF, and processing caper out :)

Jeez imagine how many customers you could bring out of the woodwork and how much extra folding you could create with that matched to a 600 f5.6 PF !! :D Future proof your lead !
Heck you'd even make room for an updated D7600 as well :t:
If you want them to come - then you've got to build it .... :cat:

D6 delayed until May .....

Nikon has pretty much announced it's intention to develop the F and the Z mounts in parallel for the foreseeable future. There are ructions that a Mirrorless 61MP Z8 was on the way later this year, though with COVID-19 throwing a huge monkey wrench in the works, who knows when that will arrive. It is odds on that a DSLR twin D880 will also enter the line up and perhaps launch around the same time. I'm not sure if that is the model you're referring to, but it would make a great candidate for improved AF.

Apparently we will know for sure what will become of the Olympics. It seems highly unlikely that it could go ahead, and now the word 'postponement' is back on the agenda - even if that period is a full year. Nikon has already announced that the D6 will be delayed until May ...... maybe given what is happening in the world, even longer.
https://nikonrumors.com/2020/03/09/...date-for-the-nikkor-z-20mm-f-1-8-s-lens.aspx/

Given that any possible 61MP D880 would have a DX equivalent of ~27MP, I think this possibly offers Nikon an opportunity to also upgrade the 20.8MP D500 into a 26MP D500S. While this seems a strange suggestion at first, I think we can fairly certainly say that the Z8 will be a stills/video machine with it's IBIS, while the D880 will be more stills focused (ie I'm not expecting any D780 style hybrid video functionality, it will stick to around D850 video capability). This could leave room for a stills/video capable 26MP D500S a' la the D780 system. Any video capability of any D500S might possibly be full width of the crop so as to differentiate it from the Mirrorless Z50 (which doesn't have IBIS anyway) without treading on any FF toes. This would also be a great implementation of the D6 AF system.

I was a bit disappointed not to even hear a whisper of this prior to the delay until May, and now COVID-19 complications and business ramifications on top. The economic impact to many industries is massive. This is a double whammy to the photographic industry that was already struggling and predicted to halve in size anyway.

Brad Hill posted a couple of days ago on his website that he'll get the D6 in early May.

Gonna be interesting ...

The D6 sensor has been tested at photonstophotos.
I wonder what sort of error bars are involved in these measurements ? ie. whether the D6 and D5 measurements are identical within the margin of error ?
https://nikonrumors.com/2020/06/21/nikon-d6-sensor-measurements-published-at-photonstophotos.aspx/

Pretty much the same as the D5, which means at lower ISO's it's lagging the new Canon 1DX III, and the 24MP Sony A9 II. I don't think any of that will matter to potential purchasers/users. There are enough connectivity/processing improvements to pique interest. I also wonder if any of the Pro's will make use of the new Canon file format in preference to RAW to speed up image transfer to clients wanting real time content ?

The improved D6 AF would want to be some kind of wonderful .... ?

TBM - Nice set up !
Have you given the AF a good workout, and do you think it's still top of the heap compared to the Sony A9II and Canon 1DX III ?

What sort of things and situations have you been using that lens on ? Handheld ?
