Oh Where Oh Where Art Thou D500S ...... ?
B
It's interesting to see that over on DPReview that the 'development announcement' for Canon's highish res proish-type R cam has generated 2.5x the comments of the actually officially announced and to be delivered in a ~month or so D6. It seems the release lacks 'buzz' ....
Unless they were flat out getting the release done in time for the Olympics, then it is a focused machine that no doubt will be a perfect tool for the PRO's it's intended for, however with CanONY arguably offering more flexible cameras, I think it somewhat jams Nikon up with a puzzling lack of market space for the rest of it's range.
Nearly 4 years ago Nikon twinned the D500 with the D5. The D500 turned out to be a fantastic DX tool. However the game has moved on from there (even though Canon is happy to completely abdicate the segment from real competition). I really hope Nikon has been secretly working behind the scenes to come up with a D500S to 'twin' with the D6, and I hope it uses a Nikon fettled 26MP DX sensor. If Nikon was to pass on the D6 upgrades - AF system, Expeed 6 processor, full 11fps, and WiFi and transfer upgrades along with twin CFe slots they'd have a great stills camera that would clearly lead the pack.
The question is then what would Nikon do about the D500S's video capability? What could it do within the slim market space it has left itself? Pretty much nothing - leaving it as a specialist stills machine ? , or also add a hybrid live view video capability like the D780 ? Would it do 4K60p on a similar 1.5x crop.basis? Would it remain sub $2K ?
You can see that the industry's Full Frame mania leaves a squashed space for PRO DX machines. Sony's is perpetually vapourware, Canon has just given up, and Nikon has been resting on the D500 laurels .......
C'mon Nikon - show us that you really want the crown and set a higher bar with a killer updated 26MP D500S (with hybrid abilities) that will buy you a good 4 years to street the competition, and give you vital time to suss this Z mount high performance AF, and processing caper out
Jeez imagine how many customers you could bring out of the woodwork and how much extra folding you could create with that matched to a 600 f5.6 PF !!
Future proof your lead !
Heck you'd even make room for an updated D7600 as well :t:
If you want them to come - then you've got to build it .... :cat:
Chosun :gh:
