Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (3 Viewers)

A couple of extra items from the weekend:

6 Snipe near Copcut rise again on Saturday and 1 there yesterday evening. A few Meadow Pipits there also.
2 singing Chiffchaffs between Mildenham and Hawford Lock yesterday morning.
Generally very quiet in the breezy weather.
 
Saw this white pheasant in the field on the other side of Linacre Bridge yesterday afternoon, saw him over there in October too

3 further redhead Goosanders just flew off the canal at Hawford Mill.

And 3 more on the Severn at Hawford Lock - 2 females and a male.

An Oystercatcher on floods near the confluence at Hawford - new for the year.

100+ ducks flying around - mostly Wigeon plus a few Gadwall and at least 4 Shoveler.

5 Greylags over.

1 Chiffchaff Tapenhall and 3 in the Hawford area.
 
Water Rail seen between Mildenham and Hawford yesterday morning plus another calling near Mildenham Lock. One also calling from Coney reedbed at dusk. 1 Raven seen over Tapenhall late morning. A few Meadow Pipits over.
 
2 Little Grebes on Tapenhall pool this morning.
A pair of Wigeon on floods near the confluence at Hawford. About a dozen Gadwall flying around in 2 flocks.
An increase in Chiffchaffs - 1 Tapenhall, 3 around Hawford, 2 Egg Lane, 1 Knight's Grove, 3 Salwarpe and 1 Coney Meadow.

3 Yellowhammers Sinton Lane
 
2 Snipe flushed from Copcut Rise early evening plus 5 more flew from Coney reedbed at dusk.
A female Tawny Owl called from Salwarpe village.
2 Gadwall around Hawford fishing pools this morning and 3 Greylags over there.
Kingfisher near the confluence this morning and at Salwarpe yesterday.
Singing Blackcaps around Salwarpe and Hawford over the past few days may be newly arrived migrants - impossible to tell for sure, given their constant presence over the winter. Interestingly, Portland Obs considered birds seen there over the past week to be new arrivals.
Chiffchaffs now present all over in good numbers.
Yellowhammer over near Bevere, Skylarks singing in many places, and few Meadow Pipits over, Linnets, a flock of c 20 Fieldfares near Salwarpe yesterday, Redwings over Coney this evening but definitely a drop in their numbers.
Water Rail singing from Coney reedbed yesterday evening.

Butterflies today included reasonable numbers of Brimstones (c10), 2 Commas, 2 Small Tortoiseshells and a Peacock. Tawny Mining Bees, Honey Bees and several Bumblebees flying around.

Lots of Toads in the canal.

A couple of Pipistrelles flying around this evening.
 
A single Sand Martin flying around Coney Meadow for the past 20 minutes just dropped into the reedbed. New for the year on the patch.
 
34 Sand Martins roosted at Coney reedbed this evening.
Coot and Little Grebe on Tapenhall pool this morning.

Little Owl in tree at Linacres paddocks.
3 Greylags over Tapenhall
5 Redwings, 1 Fieldfare, Meadow Pipits, 1 Yellowhammer, lots of Chiffchaffs now, several Blackcaps in full song, Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and singing Skylarks this morning.

My first Holly Blue of the year, a couple of Commas and a Peacock butterflies.
 
4 Lapwings displaying over fields near Chatley this morning.
2 Sand Martins flying around Hawford lock area.
Little Owl again
Kestrel, Buzzards, Cormorants, Chiffchaffs, Blackcaps, Mistle Thrushes, Coal Tits, Treecreeper, Goldcrests, Grey Wagtails, Grey Heron, Kingfisher and the common Woodpeckers.

2 Speckled Woods and Peacock butterflies.
 
4 Redpolls over Hawford lock this morning
A Siskin over near Linacre bridge
c30 Fieldfares over Hawford farm
1 Greylag flew down the valley with Canadas
No spring migrants except for loads of Chiffchaffs and a few singing Blackcaps.
2 Coots and a Little Grebe on Tapenhall pool still.
 
2 Snipe and a couple of Meadow Pipits near Copcut Rise on rough ground.
About 100 Sand Martins over Westwood mid afternoon - viewable from Coney Meadow - appeared to move off later. None roosted at Coney.
 
2 Swallows perched on wires along Sinton Lane - new for the year.
Still lots of Meadow Pipits around.
3+ Yellowhammers
A pair of Mandarin on the small pool between Chatley and Hawford earlier.
Coot on Tapenhall pool
3 Gadwall around Hawford fishing pools.
2 Lapwings displaying near Chatley and
3 Fieldfares over near there.
Redwing near Hawford Lock.
Kingfisher, 2 Grey Wagtails, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Buzzards, Skylarks, Treecreeper, Coal Tit, etc
