That often happens in the transfer from Greek to Latin - but 'tridactyla' is the spelling Linnaeus used, and it is fixed in the rules of zoological nomenclature o:D

The main reason for adding the correct spelling is in case someone ever wants to search birdforum for Kittiwake posts, using the scientific name as the search term :t:
 
Yes, of course I am aware of and understand that, Nutcracker! I only want to make the point that it is easier to misspell a word if in your own language (and the original one of the word, in this case Greek) it is written in a slightly different way to the "right" one
