Sounds like lots of good birding! I love the first pic - couldn't figure that out on the thumbnail :t: Good shot of the flying spoonbills too. (Is that a great egret with them? Surely not - but I see black feet...)

edit - I see the label says Chinese egret! Nice comparison anyway.

Tom,

Sounds like the season is going quite well for you! As always, enjoy your pics - the honey buzzard does look like a vulture! I struggled to decide if the sparrowhawk and grey-faced buzzard were really different species (some day I will see shapes!). Your little bunting is very handsome, as is the lancy (which I've not taken a good look at before). I'm still waiting to see a drongo in this country!

By the way, do you think the Crested Mynas you have seen are all releases - any signs that they are breeding?

Some good records Tom - first Streaked Shearwaters I've heard of in China away from Hong Kong.

What is the scientific name of Korean Bush Warbler?

I agree with Gretchen - the Lancy pic is a cracker

Cheers
Mike

Mike,

Mark Brazil says Cettia canturians and formerly part of Japanese Bush Warbler. I've only seen it once a few years ago.

Streaked Shearwaters were found by Terry Townshend and Spike Millington. See the link to their report above.

Gretchen, it's hard to say about the Mynas. I saw a few again this morning. They are migrating and returning -- probably breeding around here somewhere.

Not much happening today with so much construction going on right beside the productive areas. I couldn't even hear myself think, let alone birds. Could it be that my seven good birding sites are now down to 1.5? Maybe for this year anyway, we'll see what actually arises right next to the river where Ruddy-breasted Crake was breeding last year|8||. I'm told that it will be upscale houses.

Forest Wagtails, Orioles, Striated Herons, Arctic Warblers, and not much more.

Jinshi Golf Course June 7, 2011

I have been out a few times in the last 5 days but had nothing special to report until yesterday when I found a Large Hawk Cuckoo This is new for me and for the area as far as I know. I also recorded an Indian Cuckoo at very close range. This was at Jinshi Golf Course after I managed to get in. By the time I figured out where the birds were I had to leave and the fog was rolling in off the ocean. There has been a lot of fog and mist here in the last week. Temps have struggled to hit 20 (despite what the internet says) and I am wearing a long sleeve shirt with a zipped up spring jacket still. June birding, because it follows May, is depressing but can be surprising if the effort is made to get out. Here is the list from the Jinshi Golf Course (one hour from 4:30-5:30 pm):

Common Pheasant (heard only but probably 10 individuals)
Eurasian Kestrel -- 1
Large Hawk Cuckoo -- 1 (life bird for me)
Indian Cuckoo -- 1 seen, 3 more heard.
Eurasian Cuckoo -- 1 heard
Dollarbird -- 1
Great Spotted Woodpecker -- 2
Brown Shrike -- 1
Black-naped Oriole -- 4 seen, maybe 10 heard total
Black Drongo -- 1
Azure-winged Magpie -- 6 actually a big deal in Jinshitan!! I've seen them in the Dalian area about 5 times in 5 years.
Won't mention the other magpies!
Great Tit -- 2 adults and 2 juveniles (juv. Great Tits sounds a lot like Varied Tits and made me very interested for a few minutes)
Barn Swallow -- many
Red-rumped Swallow -- 3
Chinese Hill Warbler -- 2
Chinese Bulbul -- 4
Oriental Reed Warbler -- 1 heard
Arctic Wabler -- 1
Vinous-throated Parrotbill -- a group of about 10
Blue Rock Thrush -- 1 pair, more singing in the fog.
White Wagtail -- 1
Greenfinch -- many
