Native waterbirds are about to be maimed and killed for fun. Here's why. (1 Viewer)

Given the severe drought, impacts due to water extraction exploitation, and fires we are just emerging from, and even the scientific and departmental advice against this decision, my view is that this is a political decision of despicable stoopidity. Your views may vary.

"Prolonged drought has seen waterbird numbers plummet and breeding drop to record lows. Catastrophic fires have destroyed habitats and experts are warning that the full impact on ecosystems and wildlife — including native waterbirds — may not be understood for months or even years."

"There's been around about a seventy per cent decline in waterbirds over the past thirty-odd years ... if the decline of wetlands continues ... the ultimate result of that is extinction of animals."
"Professor Richard Kingsford, director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science at the University of NSW"

There is a petition at the end of the article. I urge every bird lover and person of common sense to sign it.

This is also the contact details page for Premier Daniel Andrews.

Contact him and his party to tell him what a dill he is being.

Thanks Kevin :t:

This goes beyond poor decision making into the unconscionable.

It seems that decision making used old data prior to the summer fire crisis.

It's really not rocket science - the Murray-Darling has had water extracted to the point of being 1000's of km of bone dry riverbed and dying ecosystems. So the birds aren't there.
Further west of that into the centre of Australia, and indeed north too, is in prolonged drought. So the birds aren't there.
Just about the entire east coast of Australia burnt to the ground over summer. Any surviving birds are likely to be concentrated in the scant remaining unburnt and undrained wetlands. The core breeding population which is the only chance of repopulating the country after declines of 70, 80% or more over the decades. It defies incredulity that these easy pickings are now to be hunted.

Despite this, still the hunters are up in arms.

I urge everyone again to sign the petition ....

And also contact the Premier's office directly to give them a verbal blast.

I signed the letter and it's triggered ton of atomatic e-mail responses that have inundated my inbox.
Thanks Andy. By a "ton" do you mean the 7 automatic acknowlegement of receipt responses from the various Parliamentary Members that the petition is sent to ? That's what I got. Nothing to worry about. Reassuring. It will be interesting to see who of those gets back when, and what they will have to say.

It's very important as many people as possible petition in the hope of getting this ridiculous slaughter shut down. Logically, these are the last of the ducks seeking refuge after all of the catastrophes we have had and are essential to repopulation breeding cycles.

Some were from MP's but there were numerous others which are now deleted or I could tell you who they were from.
