Hi all,

After finishing up my time in Indonesia, I headed to the Comoros to meet up with Josh Beck. We covered all four islands, Grande Comore, Moheli, Anjouan, and Mayotte. The trip was a huge success and we managed all of the endemics/endemic subspecies except one (moheli ssp of Madagascar Brush Warbler).

The trip started off on Grand Comore where we quickly picked up the drongo and then headed up the slopes of Mt Karthala for the remaining targets. Although we hiked up the mountain, there is now a dirt road (high clearance recommended) that reaches the top of the mountain which will make birding the island even easier. After Grand Comore we flew to Moheli where we spent a few days tracking down all of our targets except the Moheli race of Madagascar Brush Warbler. The highlight was finding a single female Comore Cuckooshrike of the moheliensis ssp which is very rarely reported.

Comoros Part 2

Hi all,

From Moheli we headed to the island of Anjouan. Our goal was to take a boat between the islands and although we accomplished that, it was the most miserable boat ride of both of our lives, getting us both completely soaked and pummeled by waves for hours.

Luckily after arriving on Anjouan things got better and despite a very lack luster first evening, the next day we visited Moya and picked up all of the Anjouan endemics and ssp endemics. From there we flew to Mayotte and once again managed to clean up the remaining targets.

Best,

Ross
