Some stuff from Morroco ! (1 Viewer)

You Say Andy that you originally wanted everyone to post pics of birds they have experienced in Morrocco. I went in 2005 So when I start Pinting, i'll have a go at Common Bulbul

Here's that sandgrouse painting in progress. I've been working on
other pieces in between so Its been dragging on a bit.
I'm hoping that by posting this as a progress report as such
it will make me finish it now .

I've been gradually working the mountains up in the background.
Its a fairly large piece, 122cm x 61cm

I spent most of today still working on the moutains in the
distance applying thin washes and pushing them back. Then going in
and working up the highlights and shadows again until I was happy.

will start blocking in the rest of the background on Monday.
Weekends here and its family time!

this is going to be beautiful (and full of action!), makes me wish I'd done more sketching the last time I was in this sort of habitat.

Fantastic work. I wish I could paint like that! How do you get the scenery to look so photorealistic? I love the redstart sketch/painting as well.

A,bit more done. starting to come together now. also starting a
Bonelli's Eagle piece.

Wow - they're like ghosts - I love this piece. What are you doing Andrew? Do you make the birds' form by underpainting tones of white and grey? and then add layers of colour on top? Fascinating stuff.

Tim , all I'm doing is marking in where the fall of light will appear
on the birds and it also acts as a more permanent guide
of the drawing underneath befor I loose it becuase of more
layers of paint going on .

It also helps you with the keeping the tonal value's in check.

I have never used that method of doing a complete painting in grey
scale if you like and then layering transparent colour on top.
Showing my ignorance here cos There is a academic term for that
method isn't there?:h?:

I usually block in colour in layers building form and detail as it developes.
