Hi,

Just started photographing insects and would appreciate I.D. of the attached. I've been told it is a hoverfly but I'm not sure.

On the 1st, the warm day brought out some insects and on some flowering blackthorn I saw my first red admiral of the year, two buff-tailed bumble bees and this hoverfly which I think is Eristalis tenax.

Is this Mallota cimbiciformis by any chance? Photographed in eastern Ireland this morning.

At Kelling Quag yesterday, I found a stonking Volucella zonaria on hogweed - an absolutely massive beast and extremely convincing as a hornet mimic. It was the day's highlight.
