You just have to read this - a report commissioned by the Environmental Protection Agency in the US that reveals the hitherto unknown phenomena of wetlands causing pollution!!! Coincidentally, this gives a green light to developers in southwest Florida...who'd have thought it?!

Read on, then go and sit in a darkened room for a while.

WETLANDS POLLUTE, SAYS STUDY OKAYED BY EPA
EPA Biologist Resigns in Protest; Study Clears Way for SW Florida Developments

Washington, DC — A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency biologist has resigned in protest of his agency’s acceptance of a developer-financed study concluding that wetlands discharge more pollutants than they absorb, according to a statement released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). EPA’s approval of the study gives developers credit for improving water quality by replacing natural wetlands with golf courses and other developments.

A group comprised largely of local developers in Southwest Florida contracted Harvey Harper to write the report outlining how the developers could address worsening water quality problems in the region. The resultant Harper Report concludes that —

· Wetlands generate pollution, based upon sampling collected in wetlands next to highways and bridges; and

· Developers can escape federal wetlands restrictions by employing a tactic called “rent-a-cow,” whereby the land owner allows a few cattle to graze in the wetland so it can classified as “improved pasture.”

Often called “nature’s kidneys,” wetlands are protected by the Clean Water Act in part because of the role they play in purifying water. Despite these legal protections, America’s wetlands are shrinking as regulatory agencies find ways to approve more development.

Bruce Boler, a former state water quality specialist, resigned after three years with EPA. Boler, in his resignation statement, cited the stance taken by the EPA Regional Administrator Jimmie Palmer that “EPA would not oppose state positions, so if a state had no water quality problems with a project then neither would EPA.” The state of Florida has already signed off on the Harper Report.

“In the Bush Administration’s bizarre world of ‘sound science,’ wetlands cause pollution and there is no evidence of global warming,” commented PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch. PEER is leading a coalition of environmental groups seeking to stop ten projects in the Western Everglades that would destroy more than 2,000 acres of wetlands. “EPA’s new position that wetlands pollute stands the Clean Water Act on its head and sends the all-clear signal to developers that no project is out of bounds.”

"Absolute disgrace" is about right Steve, and of course this will doubtless begin to set a precedent for all manner of developmental and economic rationalist nonesense..........and is that a Blue Oyster Cult symbol that I detect!?
Cheers,

When I first read this, I just shook my head not being able to comprehend how this could have ever come about in this day and age of enlightenment.

It is one of the most disgraceful pieces of trash I have ever read and where I am loathe to have this turn into a political debate, it really is all politics and the man in office right now.

I think I can hazard a guess. When I was in America last year I was billetted for a night with a family in North Carolina. We got talking about the murders in Virginia and Maryland and I mentioned to the husband that, to us in Britain, legal decisions in the USA often seem bizarre. He assured me that Americans find them just as bizarre. The problem, he reckoned, was that there are just to many lawyers all intent on making livings for themselves. Later I asked his wife what he did for a living. She said, "He's a lawyer"!

I'm horrified!!!

But I guess if they can invent evidence of 'weapons of mass destruction' at the drop of a hat they can find just about anything they want to and call it fact. By the time the argument can be refuted it will be too late and the damage already done.

What really terrifies me is the way other countries, Australia in particular, leap to follow in the misguided footsteps of George W and his cronies.

Is there some way we can put pressure on OUR governments to protest against this decision by the American administration. I'm going to send the information to our Shadow Minister for the Environment and any other politicians I can think of that might be interested.

I'm certainly not going to argue that point Jason. I've been in the legal field for 24 years. It is all too true.

Please don't send it to any Minister or Shadow Minister over here. They'll probably think its a good idea.

don't vote for ANYONE with a similar outlook on the planet......

let them know how you feel too. Globalisation/opening of markets/free trade etc (which is the 'philosophy' in the background of all these things) will not be opposed by any mainstream party.

if you don't agree with them don't vote for them because you've got to vote for 'someone'

Real change only ever comes from the people - it's up to us.

Spread the word.
