This evening I went out looking for whip-poor-wills. As soon as I got to the site, I had crippling views of a singing male in my spotlight from ten feet away. By far the best looks I’ve ever had of this species.

364. Eastern Whip-poor-will

Up until now, spring migration has been rather slow, with new birds showing up in small numbers here and there. Today, however, there were lots of birds everywhere, and I added eight to my Year List.

365. Yellow-breasted Chat
366. Magnolia Warbler
367. Black-billed Cuckoo
368. Prairie Warbler
369. Veery
370. Nashville Warbler
371. Canada Warbler
372. Virginia Rail

The rail was completely unexpected and was a Preston County lifer, number 236.

I went for a walk this morning through woodland on the banks of the renaturised Lippe, from Marienloh upriver towards Bad Lippspringe and got a few new birds for the year:

115 Firecrest
116 White throated Dipper
117 Willow Tit
118 Grey Wagtail
119 Common Nightingale
120 Green Woodpecker
121 Short toed Treecreeper

And a belated entry from March I forgot to add to the list:

122 Dunlin

On my way back to Uppsala for a few days. Took a short detour half way through to get a lifer. A stonking male, down to 30 meters!

189. King Eider

I made the most of a three-hour break in heavy rain to get a little birding in. I managed to see two new birds for the year.

373. Short-billed Dowitcher
374. Cerulean Warbler

The dowitchers are rare birds in this part of the state. The 33 that I saw were probably part of a fall-out due to the rain.

Missed the Caspian a few times at nearby lake. Our outing was muddy, spent quite a while cleaning the car. But I did add two peeps to that lake, Branched Oak, making my 5 season total 170 there.
