Hi:

I just saw this hawk in my backyard a short while ago.

Can someone tell me what type it is?

Either Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk. Looks more like Sharp-shinned to me.

Secondly, I tend to agree with Torch. I think it's a Sharpie, too.

Looks like a Sharp-shinned, as crown and nape seems to be the same colour,and eye is placed more centrally in the head, and the structure of the bird.

Thanks for the replies -

After reading your comments, I looked in my field guide and it sure seems to be a Sharp-shinned. Pretty cool. I typically see Red Tails here in Kansas City - maybe the Sharp-shinned are more numerous than I think and I've just missed them to this point, but still quite fun to see this one.
