Upton Warren (18 Viewers)

Only had time for a short visit this morning so concentrated on the Flashes-

Sailing Pool-
10 Cormorant, 1 Grey Heron, 6 Mute Swan (initially 1 adult later joined by 5 juveniles), 2 Tufted Duck, Mallard, Coot, Moorhen, 4 Great Crested Grebe and 1 Grey Wagtail.

Flashes-
5 juv Mute Swan -> (birds from Sailing Pool), 30 Canada Goose ->, 10 Mallard, 50 Teal, 2 Cormorant, 1 Kestrel, ->, 16 Moorhen, 5 Coot, 56 Lapwing (all later flew off to Moors), 70 Black-Headed Gull around sewage works, 1 Lesser Black-Backed Gull ->, Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, Magpie, 1 Jay, Blackbird, Fieldfare, Redwing, Starling, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long-Tailed Tit, Robin, Dunnock, Wren, 1 female Stonechat along the hedgerow to the right of the hide, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Bullfinch, Linnet and 2 Pied Wagtail.

can only add 2 collard dove but one not heard today on either side was Cettis Warbler just wondering if any have been heard lately?
 
Barn Owl

Barn Owl showed well this afternoon in fading but good light and just as I arrived to be greeted by a guy called |an who told me that the owl was on the fence to the right of the hide.
Superb views . It landed at least three times so presumably made some good catches.
Flew across the third flash and along the sewage meadow several times. Made one cross to the ground to the left of the hide where it landed for its presumed catch.
All between 3.15 and 3.30 ish. Hide was empty when I left and by 4.15 no one else had come down to the hide.

Any thing which might have roosted tonight would have come in later. A remarkably empty Flashes.

The Moors on the other hand had the usual suspects and whilst the snipe appeared to be in hiding the Canada geese were in mega abundance. Might try to count them from the photos later. Half a dozen greylag, one LBBG, one Little Grebe one heron, a couple of tufted pairs that I could see and a group of six shoveler. Didn't count the teal but most were snoozing along any sheltered edge they could find. Didn't count the BHGs but there were a large number of them hunkered down on Pool Island along with at least one Shelduck and four cormorants.

FLASHES:

5 Green Sands, 11 Curlew, 20 Lapwing, Snipe, 2 Shelduck, 6 Shoveler, 5 Teal, c150 Canada Geese, 22 Greylags, 30 BHG, 2 Herring Gull, 2 LBBG, Fieldfare, 2 Goldfinch, Linnet.

HEN BROOK:

8 Teal, Shoveler.

SAILING POOL:

5 GC Grebe, 5 Mute Swan(1st winters), 2 Tufted Duck, Grey Heron.

MOORS POOL:

45+ Snipe, 75 Lapwing, 2 Little Egret, 2 Grey Heron, 6 Pochard, 16 Shoveler, 30 Teal, 9 Gadwall, 21 Tufted Duck, 2 Little Grebe, 2 Mute Swans, c250 BHG, 6 Herring Gull, 4 LBBG, 3 Fieldfare, Kestrel.

The 2 Shelduck seen at the Moors Pool were most probably the birds that flew away from the Flashes early morning, as were some of the Shoveler. The Curlew flock also frequented the Moors Pool and the fields adjacent to the A38.
 
Today at Moors

We cancelled the work party due to the weather forecast.
So today spent the whole day at the East hide where very strong SSW winds and heavy rain forced me to have the windows closed for most of the afternoon.
Unfortunately the wind and rain didnt bring anything new other than a trickle of gulls.
The snipe were as normal resting along the promontory. I counted 72 at one point but later a grey heron landed close by and they took flight . My count was short of the true figure when at least 90 flew round briefly some had not flown so the total woul be clser to 100.
Later in the day groups of starling battled against the wind and flew over to the Flashes.
1000 were seen coming out from their roost this morning by Bob O and Tony B somewhere by north 1st Flash.
Two flocks of redwing roosted on the east side of the Moors.

Little grebe 3.Little egret. Cormorant 18. Canadas 260. Greylag 18. Mute swan 2.
Shoveler 16. Gadwall 6. Teal 45. Mallard c30. Shelduck 2. Tufted 39. Pochard 10.
Coot 18. Water rail 2.
Snipe 90+. Curlew 10. Lapwing 51.
BHG 450. LBBG 12+. Herring Gull c10.
Buzzard.
Stock dove. Kingfisher.
Fieldfare 3. Redwing 50+. Starling 300+.
Pied wag 2. Goldfinch 55

At the Flashes this morning Bob O and Tony B had Barn owl, green sand x3. Starling 1000

11 Curlew, 46 Lapwing, 2 Shelduck, 35 Teal, c200 Canada Geese, 14 Greylag Geese, c800 BH Gull, 6 LBB Gull, Stonechat female. The Shelduck, Curlew, geese & most of the gulls gone before 8am.

- Mediterranean Gull at the Moors Pool

- Common Gull and 13 Wigeon at the Flashes

From the Flashes this morning Andy P reports:

2 Shelduck flew out at c8:15am. Also 11 Curlew, 2 Lapwing, 31 Teal, c400 BH Gull, 2 LBB Gull, 14 Greylag Geese, c200 Canada Geese, Stonechat female.

The water level at the Flashes is 0.49; the Hen Brook is over the bridge leading to the Hen Brook hide.

At the half way point of December the monthly list presently stands on 78 species. This compares with an average monthly total of 82.67 species with a peak of 85 (0215) and a low of 82 (2014, 2017 and 2018), the smallest monthly variation between the two extremes.

Possible additions in the final fortnight of the year include:

Whooper Swan, Pintail, Mandarin Duck, Goosander, Red Kite, Golden Plover, Dunlin, Redshank, Woodcock, GBBG Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Tawny Owl, Feral Pigeon, Skylark, Treecreeper, House Sparrow, Rook, Brambling, Lesser Redpoll
