Coney Meadow and Adjoining Areas (5 Viewers)

26 Glow worms this evening - the highest count so far this year with 15 of those in new positions.

1 Gorsey Bank
3 Hopyard Wood
6 near the allotments
2 on the railway track
14 along the Roman Way.
 
Two Hobbies over Hawford near the confluence this morning. A Little Egret over there also.
An adult and a juvenile Lapwing near Linacre bridge on the muddy patch - suggesting local breeding.
Little Owl Linacres paddocks.
Little Grebe on small pool between Chatley and Hawford
Yellowhammers along Sinton Lane.
Kestrels, Sparrowhawk and Buzzards, Great Spotted and Green Woodpeckers, Mistle Thrushes, Jays, Grey Herons, Cormorant, Nuthatches etc.
 
26 Glow worms yesterday evening - with around 11 in new positions:

1 Hopyard Wood
6 around the allotments
4 along the railway track
15 along the Roman Way
 
A Cetti's Warbler was calling from reeds along the canal near Mildenham this morning - new for the year!

A Red Kite circled high over Linacre bridge then drifted off towards Fernhill Heath.

2 Juv Lapwings with an adult female on muddy patch near Linacre bridge.

Little Owl, Little Grebe, Yellowhammers, Coots and Cormorant among the other birds seen.
 
A good morning's birding for July:

As well as the Crossbills, a Common Tern flew up the valley over New Mill. Either it or another was seen later flying down the valley over Tapenhall pool.

2 Little Egrets flying around Porter's Mill.

Juvenile Cuckoo flew from the reeds along the canal at Tapenhall and showed well perched in a tree - it was giving its begging call constantly.

A nice yellow juvenile Willow Warbler along the canal at Mildenham.

2 Lapwing juveniles plus an adult at Linacre bridge again.

Coots - adult and well grown juvs on Tapenhall pool.

Reed and Sedge Warblers, Yellowhammer, Little Owl, Grey Herons, Blackcaps, Kestrel, Sparrowhawks, Buzzards, Reed Buntings, both common Woodpeckers, Swifts, Swallows and House Martin's.
 
A Raven seen twice over Copcut yesterday evening.
25+ Greylag Geese flew towards Westwood at dusk.

17 Glow worms noted - 2 between allotments and Roman Way, 3 along the railway track and 12 along the Roman Way. 4 were in new positions.
 
3+ Spotted Flycatchers at Knight's Grove this morning plus juvenile Willow Warbler, 3 Hobbies together over there and several Yellowhammers nearby. Lesser and Common Whitethroats near Moat Farm yesterday.

Cetti's Warbler along the canal near Mildenham this morning plus juvenile Cuckoo being fed by Reed Warbler and a Little Egret over. Lesser Whitethroat also. Lapwing in field nearby.

Another Little Egret near the confluence.

Little Owl at Linacres paddocks in usual tree.

Little Grebe yesterday on small pool between Chatley and Hawford.

Also seen this weekend: Sparrowhawks, several Ravens in various places, Kestrel, Buzzards, Green and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, Coal Tits, Mistle Thrush, Bullfinches, Cormorant, Sedge Warblers, Reed Buntings, Blackcaps, Grey Herons, Swallows and House Martin's. Several Swifts seen from Coney Meadow on Friday.

Insects including several Brown Hawkers, Southern Hawkers, Common Darter and Brimstone butterfly.

12 along the Roman Way

3 were in new positions.

3 Noctule Bats seen over Coney Meadow, 2 Sand Matins flew over there. Several Swifts around Westwood.
 
Reed and Sedge Warbler Survey

I meant to post this earlier - see attached, this year's survey of Reed and Sedge Warbler territories - which I carried out for the CRT.

Very interesting.
Lets hope CRT take this survey on board and act accordingly. The management of the reeds, particularly along the canal needs to be done very sensitively.

Green Sanpiper near Hawford on muddy patch near Linacre bridge this morning and juvenile Cuckoo flying around Mildenham. Two Lapwings also in the area.

The only other good birds this morning were a Little Egret near the confluence and a Little Grebe on the small pool between Chatley and Hawford.
 
A Common Sandpiper near the confluence this morning plus a Little Egret and Kingfisher near there.
A Green Sanpiper on muddy patch near Linacre Bridge.
The Cetti's Warbler showed reasonably well near there.
30+ Greylags over Hawford Farm.
Singing Willow Warbler near there.
Hobby and a single Swift over Egg Lane.
A couple of Painted Ladies seen.
 
Only 2 Glow worms noted last night - both along the Roman Way.

My first Migrant Hawker of the year seen on Friday near Mildenham.
 
There are two singing Male Cetti's Warblers between Mildenham and Hawford - one near Linacre bridge and another nearer Mildenham.

Little Egret just flew over.

Hobby and Sparrowhawk over too.

Just had a very close encounter with an otter - it was in a ditch that feeds into the Salwarpe near Mildenham.

Little Owl in its usual tree at Linacres paddocks.
Little Grebe juvenile earlier on small pool between Chatley and Hawford.
 
A Spotted Flycatcher between Mildenham and Hawford this morning.

A Cetti's Warbler only heard a couple of times calling.

Willow Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, juvenile Sedge Warbler, Reed Warblers, 1 Sand Martin amongst the hirundines, Little Owl, Raven, Yellowhammer over Jacob's Ladder area, Grey Herons, Kingfisher and Reed Buntings.

A Mink seen on the footpath near Hawford Mill plus a Bank Vole.
