Sony Nex 7 (1 Viewer)

After a year of waiting I came across the nex 7 in one of my local stores on Saturday and as my wife had just bought herself another handbag I was able to get one.
http://www.dpreview.com/products/sony/slrs/sony_nex7
As I already had the Zeiss 24/1.8 for the Nex 5 I immediately hooked it up and this will be my main lens.
I did some tests on Sunday with the kit 18-55 zoom and the 18-200 zoom as well as the 15 mm Voigtlander.
Unfortunately the typhoon signal No.1 was up and squally rainshowers kept passing through so light was a bit of an issue but the camera did a reasonable job. I thought the 18-200 zoom wouldn't be able to keep up with the resolution of the 24 meg sensor but it held it's own.
Here are few images. First and Third with the Zeiss 24/1.8, second with the 18-200 zoom, fourth with the 18-55 zoom and the last with Voigtlander 15mm.

I took the Nex 7 out in the rain on Wednesday with the 18-55/3.5-56 kit zoom lens.
It got wet a couple of times but kept on shooting. I shot some video with it too.

I took the NEX 7 down to the harbor today to test out some Leica Lenses. I was impressed with the Focus Peaking feature for focusing and found it easier in some instances than AF.
Here are a few photos.

I'm a bit surprised that there's not a bit more interest in the NEX 7 but I'm having fun with it.
I took it on my recent trip to Oman , along with the Canon SX40HS for the birds.
Here are a few images taken with it and the 18-200 mm lens.

It's nice to have Raw but the jpegs from the Nex 7 are very good. For comparison here is the same shot as a jpeg (top) and Raw (bottom). I warmed up the WB a bit in the Raw shot which is nice to be able to do.
The other shots were taken with the 18-55 kit zoom which I don't use very often.

Very nice images. I like the subdued lighting from the overcast sky in some of the pix. Looks like the Sony NEX 7 works well for you.

Phil,
Thanks Phil. The 24 meg Sony sensor does a good job and produces quality large files. I often crop two different images out of the one file.
Neil.

It seems that Sony sensors are being widely used and the newly announced tie-up with Olympus is interesting.
I took the Nex 7 out again with the Zeiss 24/1.8 lens on it. I like the color of this combo as it has a "film look" about it.

Hi,
How did that combo feel as a walk-about holiday camera, too heavy or easy to handle ?
Am considering this as an alternative to carting a 7D around over my shoulder !

Andy,
Sorry I'm a bit late getting back to you on this.
It is a slightly unbalanced combo. I wish the lens had a tripod collar because it's difficult to set up for video but the results from the lens are impressive and it is possible to hand hold for video due to Sony"s image stabilising.
I like the zoom range range though and my only other similar range is the Nikon 70-200/2.8 AFS VR on the D7000 but this is much heavier and bulkier and not wide enough for a travel camera.
Neil.

Hi Neil,
No problem. I have purchased a NEX-6Y with the 55-210mm lense which is lighter than the 18-20mm.
But I wont be home till after Christmas to get to see it !
Thanks.
Andy

That should be a good combo, Andy. I've been using the NEX-5N with the 55-210mm lens as a second body or lightweight alternative to my DSLR, and it does very well indeed for birding...even in-flight shots and such. You can even add on an old superzoom teleextender that screws into the filter threads and get a lot more reach out of the lens in a still light package - I use a Sony DH1758 1.7x teleextender which has 58mm threads, by using a step up ring to mate with the 49mm threading on the lens - it will vignette from 55mm to around 75mm, but once past that range, you get 1.7x all the way to 210mm, which will give you 357mm optically in a very compact and lightweight overall package. My gallery of 55-210mm lens shots, all taken with NEX-5N, including lots of birding down here in Florida - note that most birding shots also used the 1.7x teleextender (it is noted in the description under each photo if used):

I've been having fun with the NEX 7 on the new Swarovski STX 95 mm scope , using the TLS APO adapter ( no lens needed ).
Here are a few from Sydney over the last few days.

Cracking photos. i have been toying with the NEX 7, but I have heard at high iso its not that good.

I was shooting yesterday at high iso and this one was taken at iso 800 which is about as high as I want to go usually. I haven't done any testing at higher iso but if I need to I don't worry too much about the noise as I don't like to miss anything.

Another beauty, how far away were you on this shot?

Thanks Punta.
It was about 7/8 meters at a special waterhole in the bush where water collects in a shallow depression in the sandstone and the local birds come to bathe and drink. It's a bit dry here at the moment so we have to keep topping it up every other day.
Neil.

It was very quiet yesterday around the water hole and the water had dried up, so had some time to do some testing of the NEX 7 iso capability.
From iso 400/3200/6400/12000/1600
Uploaded in the wrong sequence.
