Just returned from a long weekend trip to Livermore California. Was lucky enough to spend a half day birding with a friend in some new areas. Ended the trip with 5 life birds. Cackling Goose Aluetian subspecies was pretty exciting. Here is a bird that was placed on the endangered species iist in 1967 (if i remember right) and recoverd to levels that allowed its removal from the list in 2001. Weather on the trip was poor with overcast, fog, and rain. Not a sunny California weekend but with their dire need of rain was alright.

A few birds to add to the list from the past week
The Great Cormorant is a rarity for us. Saying that this is the 2nd year in a row we have had one show up.

This morning off to Ft DeSoto Park. We had a front move through last night bringing loads of rain and wind. Ran out this a.m. to do a seawatch. Wind gusts to 40 mph from the NNW which is decent direct to push the birds in. Did score some Northern Gannets but that was it. Wind blowing so hard not much else could even fly. Saw two Spoonbills trying to fly into the winds. They were bascially going sideways and backwards.

Highlight of this week was a Broad-billed Hummingbird. LIFE BIRD. Wasn't sure about chasing until reported this morning by a friend of mine. Didn't leave house till noon for the 2+ hour drive south to Fred Coyle Freedom Park, Naples, FL. Lucked out, no wrecks to tie up traffic on way down or back. When we arrived we headed to sighting area. As we walked up I saw the Hummer feeding in a Coral Bean bush. Ran around to the other side to have sun a back to get pic. Another western US bird hanging out in Florida. Normal winter location is Mexico. WOW

Been a bit slow as we wait for migration. Big miss this past week was the Zennaida Dove down in the Keys this week. We drove down to see it and it never showed until 445 that afternoon. Of course was seen all the following day. Ugh. 6 hour drive home. But we did stop to see a Buff-Bellied Hummingbird which is a Florida Rarity at Castellow Hammock in Miami. Birds continue to trickle into Ft DeSoto. Arrived at park at 730 am and by 830 things did pick up a bit. Add 7 new birds to year list the best being a Blue Winged Warbler. First time i have seen this bird in park in 4 years. Alsway managed to miss each time before today. Also managed to score all four thrushes today. Besides year birds Veery and Gray-cheeked Thrush we had Swainsons Thrush and 2 Wood Thrush. Great day

Well migration is starting to slow a bit. Was not what we hoped for this year. This week we had a strong front push through on Wed that dropped in a few birds to Ft DeSoto Park. Since Wed I have had two large 30+ group's of Common Nighthawk fly over the house at dusk. A wonderful sight to see and hear. Here is my updated list of new birds to date
